The Quality and Risk Management (QRM) Team provides leadership, guidance and tools to help partners and staff manage quality and risk matters so they can win and retain profitable clients.

The team is comprised of three partners and twelve members of staff.

Proposed International Standard on Quality Management 1 ISQM1 is expected to be issued during 2020 and will replace the extant International Standard on Quality Control (UK) 1.

This is a new approach to quality control at the firm level, with an emphasis on responsibility of firm leadership for proactively managing quality.

It therefore represents a significant change in which audit firms in the UK, and globally, manage quality risks. It is expected that there will be at least an 18 month implementation period meaning it will come into effect at the end of 2021.

The role encompasses the project management of the design and development of the objectives and risk frameworks, policies and guidance for the UK firm that will meet the requirements of ISQM1.

The individual will work with both the ISQM1 steering committee (comprising a group of experienced partners from across the firm) and the BDO Global working groups.

The role involves significant interaction with senior members of the firm both in the UK and globally and will provide an insight into the functioning of a large professional services firm.

The individual will work closely with experienced Quality and Risk Management partners and there will be the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of enterprise risk management in a regulated business.


  • Support the ISQM1 steering committee and component working groups with project management
  • Assisting in the design and development of objective and risk frameworks, policies, procedures and guidance for the UK firm, supplementing BDO Global policies where required.
  • Assisting in liaising with senior leadership and senior individuals throughout the firm to develop action plans and monitor those action plans.
  • Assisting in the mapping of the firm’s procedures, processes and controls to ISQM1 requirements and identification of gaps and subsequent monitoring to ensure that gaps are addressed.
  • Assisting in documenting and reviewing detailed control descriptions and providing input to control design where required.
  • Assisting in liaising with the BDO Global working groups to feedback the UK’s approach to ISQM1 implementation and gathering information on the implementation plans of both Global and the other leading BDO firms around the world.
  • Ensuring that all other regulatory and legal requirements are incorporated into policies and processes required by ISQM1.
  • Monitoring changes in regulation in relation to audit firm governance and other quality standards in order to ensure that ISQM1 policies and procedures are reconsidered and revised as appropriate.
  • Helping to define best practice on quality and risk related matters.
  • Assisting in the development and delivery of ISQM1 related training.
  • Special projects as determined by the Head of the QRM Team.
  • Requirements

The candidate will have a good understanding of the accountancy sector and the regulatory environment together with a good understanding of risk management principles, methodologies and internal controls.
