Jacobs are recruiting for Principal Mechanical Engineers to join our Engineering Development team, which has recently won several important projects, particularly in Remote Inspection and Intervention / Handling) and Robotics (RH&R), and has a host of exciting new opportunities in nuclear fusion, new reactor development, nuclear decommissioning, operational reactor maintenance and support.

As one of the fastest growing departments in CMS-I, we are regularly involved in delivering a variety of exciting bids and projects within a number of different industries and as such the ideal candidate needs to be someone with a good broad ranging technical background, who is used to taking the lead and mentoring others, and has a demonstrable track record of contributing to projects effectively within a highly regulated environment.

We are looking for candidates who can encourage and develop others in their team whilst being accustomed to taking a hands-on approach.

This role will be based in our Birchwood office in the North West of the UK but there will be a need for periodic visits to client sites, as projects require.

The successful candidate will support the delivery of tasks within Remote Inspection and Intervention / Handling and Robotics (RH&R) projects and also work in a bid environment.

Your responsibilities will be supporting various and diverse nuclear clients providing Front End Engineering Design through to Full Life Cycle project requirements including :

  • This person must be capable of working without direct supervision and have the ability to translate a client requirement into a meaningful engineering solution.
  • Good communication and negotiation skills are essential and the aptitude to drive a team of engineers is crucial.
  • Engineering design experience is fundamental and nuclear experience is preferable but not essential.
  • Responsible for the Engineering Quality of the project delivery, ensuring compliance with client specifications and engineering standards.
  • The role works alongside the Project Manager to ensure scope changes and time are managed.
  • Responsible, in co-operation with Client Project Engineers, for the technical quality of all conceptual designs, preliminary designs, final designs and manufacturing designs, and for associated design schemes, detail drawings / models, computational analyses & animations and design documentation.
  • Maintains compliance with Engineering Standards and applicable legislation
  • Maintaining and developing the technical capability of the delivery team, identify and cover capability shortfalls.
  • Ensuring the confidentiality and security of data and information received from clients
  • Ensuring the requirements of the Health & Safety of Work act, CDM, Machineries Directive, and the COSHH regulations are understood and complied with
  • Reporting to the Project Management Team when project risks have been realised, or additional risks arise.
  • To be the principal focal point for liaison with Client Engineering Management Personnel
  • Maintain effective discipline.
  • Maintain an overview of the project and provide direction on project process, communications and consistency of approach
  • Qualifications

  • Educated to HNC / HND or degree in a relevant engineering discipline, and with extensive experience in RH&R or related areas of work
  • Chartered engineering & member of an appropriate institute.
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, and present complex arguments in a well-structured manner, suitable for a varied audience
  • Demonstrable communication skills with stakeholders both internally and externally
  • Awareness and understanding of the purpose of Safety Cases in the Nuclear industry
  • Ability to work in a team in a multidisciplinary environment, potentially in a construction site environment
  • Ability to think innovatively and solve complex problems
  • Experience of working in a safety and safety case environment within either the nuclear industry, or a similar highly regulated industry such as petrochemical or rail
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of some or all of the following techniques would be beneficial : mechanical systems and complex mechanisms, lifting equipment, mechanical handling equipment, robotics / automation, vision systems, HMI
  • Knowledge / experience of operating in an environment with a graded approach to quality processes
