Job Description

This R&D Manager position is within the Smiths Medical Vital Care & Specialty R&D organization in Plymouth, Minneapolis.

The primary responsibility of the role is to lead directly, or through a team, all stages of multiple engineering R&D projects within our temperature management, general anesthesia, patient monitoring and veterinary product franchises with significant focus on maintaining and evolving a large and varied product line.

The R&D Manager will report to the R&D Director, Vital Care & Specialty. This is a great opportunity to grow your career with an established, respected medical device company!

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, mentor, lead, manage towards achievement and evaluate employee goals and objectives aligned with the franchise strategy
  • Provide leadership and guidance for non-routine problems requiring substantial judgment in the independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria
  • May select, manage, and work with vendors
  • Work with internal departments both locally and globally to obtain necessary resources, resolve inter-departmental issues and contribute toward organizational objectives
  • Manage the selection, compensation, appraisal, feedback, training, and development of team to ensure optimum attraction, motivation, and retention of employees.

    Create, manage, evaluate, and operate within project and department budgets. Manage the creation, documentation and processing of patents sourced from the department in alignment with franchise strategic goals.

    Lead special teams or projects as defined by functional management. Assure compliance of Company operations to all applicable laws, regulations and standards, good business practices and company documented procedures (including knowledge of all standards, government occupational health and environmental regulations and statutes related to the site).

    Assure that projects are conducted according to corporate guidelines for process development and Regulatory Affairs quality standards.

    Ensure that engineers and technicians work within appropriate development processes. Engage others, promote, and participate in Environmental, Health, and Safety initiatives, focusing on continuous improvement.

    The Individual

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or similar relevant experience; master’s degree in Engineering, Management, or Business Administration preferred.
  • Previous management experience preferred; including proven ability to manage, motivate and evaluate employee performance.
  • Proven ability to lead, establish, maintain and influence effective working relationships with internal customers within the region and across functions.
  • Applies extensive technical expertise in the engineering field and has full knowledge of other related disciplines (Marketing, RA / QA, Sales, and Operations) Ability and willingness to lead and create change changes in policy, procedure, technology, and culture.

    Proven ability to coach and mentor others. Ability to clearly convey ideas and concepts verbally and in writing. Ability to handle multiple priorities and to meet key deadlines under pressure through effective time management skills.

    Ability to work accurately with attention to detail. Ability to critically review and interpret technical documentation.

    Expert problem solving and analytical ability. Ability to meet short- and long-term deadlines. Ability to effectively manage projects.

    Ability to work with integrity and build trust. Ability to travel locally, regionally, and globally up to 20%.
