Being part of the Station Capacity Team, you could help in the redesign and planning of some of the UK’s busiest stations, and integration with exciting infrastructure projects such as HS2 and Crossrail.

Brief Description Within our Team, you will lead on pedestrian planning projects to promote and build the evidence case for station upgrades throughout the network.

The role is not limited to the current infrastructure - Long term planning for future railway stations on new infrastructure is happening throughout the country.

The role includes quantitative and qualitative work, to analyse and recommend the changes to be implemented making stations as safe, accessible and user friendly as possible.

In addition, as lead for one of the Network Rail routes, you will build positive relationships with key stakeholders to collaboratively develop and improve stations.

Sitting within the larger strategic planning, economics and analysis branch of the company, you’ll develop an understanding of our process for funding enhancements and be able to learn from other areas of the business.

About the role (External) Based in Manchester or London, we’re looking for an individual with a degree in transport planning, geography or another numerate or spatial planning degree, and experience in delivering pedestrian planning projects.

You’ll need to be committed to improving stations for passengers, and be continuing to develop strong relationships with key stakeholders to get things done.

As lead for a Network Rail geographic route, and a support to a regional lead, the ability to handle a challenging workload and work autonomously is a key requirement.

Supported by your regional lead, you’ll be responsible for projects on a Network Rail route. You’ll have strong relationships with project teams, longer term strategic planners and development managers to ensure they have the technical support they need to support and prioritise enhancements and investment.

As a lead on larger projects, you will manage a team of technical specialists to deliver analysis for our customers, and present outputs in an accessible way.

Your support will be at all life-cycle stages for projects, from business case building through to challenges in phasing and buildability.

You will have an awareness of the longer-term capacity challenges on your route, and support development of schemes which holistically benefit the network.

  • Handle the relationship between route, external stakeholders and station capacity. · Prescribe analysis to make the case for capacity interventions and develop client proposals.
  • Lead a delivery team to provide outputs to agreed timescales and budgets. · Review analysis, promote best practice and follow quality assurance processes.
  • Present findings to project stakeholders and attend relevant meetings. · Scope inputs and work across teams to ensure joined up thinking · A degree in Transport Planning, or any other analytical degree, including Engineering, Geography and Mathematics.
  • Alternatively, other relevant experience will be considered. · Demonstrable experience and significant knowledge of standards relating to station design, capacity and evaluation criteria in order to certify compliance of station designs.

  • Expert knowledge of pedestrian modelling theory and methods, data collection and analytical techniques · Project management skills and can demonstrate experience in managing and delivering projects in pedestrian modelling to quality standards, on time, and within budget, including supervising others.
  • Awareness of innovations and technological advancements in the transport industry in order to undertake relevant research to open up application of pedestrian flow modelling / analysis tools and techniques on wider aspects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills written and verbal, including experience in report writing and preparing and presenting technical and financial proposals.
  • Team leadership experience including line management and mentoring · Experience of delivering projects within company project management, safety health and environmental systems and processes would be advantageous · Understanding of the Rail Industry planning cycles and processes.
