Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine

Centre for Cancer Prevention

Statistician- Research Methods Training Fellow

Research Grade 4)

The Centre for Cancer Prevention carries out world-class research in cancer screening and prevention.

Applications are invited from excellent graduates in statistics or other disciplines with a significant quantitative component, for a prestigious training fellowship in research methods, funded by the National Institute for Health Research.

The aim of the fellowship is to increase capacity in statistical methods related to medical research through training and research.

The successful candidate will develop statistical models of different bowel cancer screening regimens, in particular dynamic and personalised regimens.

If the appointed Fellow does not already hold a Master’s degree, the first year will be spent attending the MSc in Medical Statistics at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the fees for which are included in the fellowship.

It is anticipated that the Fellow will work on the models of bowel screening as their MSc project and will continue this work as a full-

time researcher in the second year of the fellowship. The fellow will also be encouraged to develop an application for an NIHR Doctoral Fellowship during the second year.

The Fellowship also includes funding for an 8-10 week Intern, to be employed during year 2, who will complete a short piece of work designed by the Fellow.

This will give the Fellow experience of person and project management.

Applicants must have a first or upper second class degree in statistics, mathematics or other quantitative discipline. They should also have good analytic and communication skills and some understanding of the research process.

The post is full-time for two years from 1st October 2018. Starting salary will be £30,455 per annum inclusive of London Allowance.

Benefits include 30 days annual leave and defined benefit pension scheme.
