The Tier 2 Support Engineer (DBA) role is responsible for the day to day operation, integrity, management and maintenance of the SQL Server database estate supported across QinetiQ.

The role will also support the development, improvement and the optimisation of procedures in QinetiQ’s database environment, utilising a working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and its associated technologies, in addition to and any other database systems implementation required by the business.

As a tier 2 Support Engineer, you will be required to assess and administer changes to all Group IT managed systems to ensure the continual improvement of operating effectiveness and efficiency in line with the change process and IT Strategy.

Key Accountabilities

  • Perform ongoing checks of the database estate utilising available monitoring tools in order to highlight and remedy any business or user impacting issues.
  • Ensure all databases are backed up to meet an agreed recovery point objective and sufficiently tested to meet an agreed recovery time objective.
  • Ensure the day to day operation, performance and integrity of the SQL Server database estate supported by QinetiQ Group IT remains within agreed standards.
  • Resolve user issues in a timely and professional manner within the ITSM system.
  • Troubleshoot service outages if they occur and escalate issues to senior team members where necessary to avoid recurrence.
  • Deploy database change scripts as provided by third party vendors and in-house developers under an agreed change management process.
  • Producing and maintaining operational documentation and ensure adherence to relevant internal and industry standards.
  • Ensure the SQL Server estate is patched to an agreed level in order to minimise operational risk.
  • Ownership and resolution of incidents and service requests.
  • Engagement with vendor and partners for 3rd line support issues.
  • Production and maintenance of operational activities and documentation.
  • Production and maintenance of user training materials, test plans and schedules.
  • Working with the cross functional business teams to ensure automation of common requestable items.
  • Key Capabilities / Knowledge

  • Microsoft SQL Server (Any version).
  • Knowledge of SQL configuration & administration.
  • Performance tuning, design and optimise high performing on premises and cloud-based SQL Server installations.
  • Microsoft Azure.
  • Microsoft Windows Server.
  • Clustering & High Availability and Disaster Recovery concepts.
  • Redgate SQL Monitor.
  • Other relational and non-relational database management systems.
  • Flexible approach to working outside core hours in order to deal with operations requirements or to meet project deadlines.
  • Able to prioritise tasks effectively and escalate where necessary.
  • Strong analytical skills and problem solving abilities.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn through self-taught and course driven avenues.
  • Experience & Qualifications

  • Knowledge of SQL configuration & administration.
  • Performance tuning, design and optimise high performing on premises and cloud-based SQL Server installations.
  • An expert in SQL Server administration and support.
  • Excellent SQL skills and experience SQL Server development environment.
  • Experience working with data warehouses.
  • Excellent knowledge of T-SQL Scripts like Stored Procedures, Functions, Triggers, Temporary Tables, Joins, Sub-Queries etc.
  • Skilled in query optimisation & query plan analysis.
  • Ability to diagnose performance problems in a SQL Server environment.
  • Proficiency in DDL and DML commands.
  • Knowledge of implementing DR solution, Backup / Recovery, Replications and Log Shipping, High Availability of database servers using Database Mirroring.
  • A hands on experience in creating users for database and importing and exporting data from one data base to another database.
  • MTA : Database Qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and analyse technical problems.
  • SC clearance to be held and maintained.
