Location : Lancaster plus travel to Kendal and Barrow in Furness

The Learning and Organisational Development team at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay is passionate about making a positive difference to the working lives of our 8000 colleagues so that they can provide the best possible care to our patients and service users.

Reporting to the Associate Director for Organisational Development and Learning, the Head of Learning and Development will lead a small but dedicated team of facilitators and coordinators to provide creative solutions to some of the organisation’s biggest challenges.

The team you will join is supportive, creative and compassionate. They understand and respond to staff concerns and needs, whether that is through delivery of developmental training or managing our bespoke Training Management System.

We are looking for someone that can lead from the front, as well as merge with the team when needed. Someone who demonstrates a range of leadership styles and that cares as much about their team’s development as they do our wider colleagues’.

You will need to be as comfortable talking to the CEO about strategy as you are with discussing the challenges of those just starting their careers.

Main duties of the job

We need a leader and manager that can think creatively about solutions, manage complexity and organise our approach to learning and development.

Occasionally you will also need to demonstrate excellence in training delivery and delivery of coaching at all levels. You will be someone that understands organisational strategy and can translate it into a programme of work that helps the Trust achieve its ambition to Create an outstanding place to work and to receive care always .

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical / Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery.

In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals.

Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

  • 5 years or more experience managing in an L&D context
  • Understanding of Leadership models and their application in organisational context
  • Experience of managing teams in a variety of contexts
  • Demonstrable experience of working with senior leadership to develop strategies and programmes
  • Desirable criteria

  • Leadership and experience in the NHS
  • Learning and development knowledge and skills

    Essential criteria

  • Knowledge and application of a wide variety of training methodologies and approaches
  • Highly experienced in facilitation and learning and development
  • Can demonstrate creative responses to L&OD needs
  • Able to create programmes of work related to organisational strategy
  • Can conduct training needs analysis in wide range of contexts
