Job Description

This exciting opportunity is based in our friendly Northern Ecology Team which is part of a large and supportive team of ecologists and environmental specialists who are based all over the UK and beyond.

You will contribute to a diverse range of projects, both small and large-scale across a variety of sectors (transport, water, buildings and power).

You will work collaboratively with colleagues from environmental and engineering disciplines and be responsible for leading ecological surveys, delivering technical reports and implementing mitigation for projects across a variety of sectors.

You will have the opportunity to influence developments to achieve the best possible outcome for nature.

This role will suit a dynamic proactive individual who wants to work in a growth area of our business and help support the delivery of ecological services in a fast moving, client focussed commercial environment.

Candidate Specification

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with a specialism such as in botany or bats.

Essential

  • BSc in Ecology, Biology, Botany, Zoology or equivalent (minimum of 2.1 classification)
  • Understanding of main UK, EU legislation and policy on biodiversity and nature conservation
  • Experience in undertaking Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and / or Ecological Impact Assessments
  • Proficiency in report writing skills, displaying high standards with attention to detail and ability to write accurate and concise reports
  • Ability to work independently, take the initiative, make robust, defensible decisions and work to tight deadlines to meet client needs
  • Basic GIS skills
  • Full, clean driving licence and willingness to travel and undertake fieldwork in the UK
  • Desirable

  • MSc in relevant subject
  • Membership of CIEEM and / or the BSBI
  • FISC botanical certificate, level 4 or above
  • Good knowledge of UK habitats and flora along with botanical survey / monitoring methods
  • Experience in undertaking botanical and habitat surveys in the UK (Phase 1 habitat survey, National Vegetation Classification, hedgerow assessments etc.)
  • Experience in using UKHab classification and the DEFRA biodiversity net gain metric
  • Experience in undertaking surveys for protected animal species in the UK
  • Personal conservation protected species licence(s)
  • Experience in analysis of ecological data
