Job Description

The Group Leader is responsible for successfully leading the department’s day-to-day activities (people / equipment / processes) with regards to safety, quality, customers, and efficiencies.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate leadership and accountability in providing and sustaining a positive safety culture. Provide support for safety training, meetings, and programs.
  • Provide recognition for safe behavior through position observations.
  • Ensure proper instruction is provided on responsibilities and safe job performance (on the job training). Provide support for safety training, meetings, and programs.
  • Attend passdown meetings, noting key quality and output issues. Observe and communicate out of the ordinary situations and ensure issues are resolved.
  • Collect performance sheets at the end of the shift and give them to the Production Supervisor for entry in the passdown document.

    Make decisions of priority and value added impacts with regards to safety, quality, customers, and efficiencies.

  • Work with other team members to perform basic assembly of products including preparation of parts, actual assembly, testing, recording of test results and packaging of the product to customer and government specifications.
  • Utilize documentation such as Bills of Material, product flow charts, work orders, check sheets, visual aids, production reports and assembly drawings to assemble product and record results.
  • May perform top quality and high efficiencies in soldering, fabricating, crimping, mechanical assembly, taping, cable spooling, sealing, capping, clamping, bonding, and coiling.
  • Moderate to advanced computer skills to load and operate auto-baggers, look up and read procedures in Pilgrim, and look up MSDS online.
  • Inspects work throughout the assembly process and communicate any quality or operational issues to appropriate leader.
  • Assist in correcting procedures to ensure consistency of quality and efficiencies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of accident investigation forms, NCR’s and PTO (attendance) paper work. Group Leader acts as back-
  • up to the Production Supervisor in regards to these tasks. May provide input to Production Supervisor or Manufacturing Manager on individual employee performance.

  • Maintains neat, orderly and clean work area to ensure efficiency and no safety hazards.
  • Demonstrates the ability and initiative to perform Production Supervisor responsibilities. Takes leadership of these roles in absence of Production Supervisor.
  • Participate in safety programs, meetings, and trainings as required. Recognize hazards and mitigate risks.
  • Bring safety concerns to the attention of management.
  • Ensure adequate stocks of safety supplies.
  • Ensure environmental conservation by shutting off of equipment and lights not in use and ensuring proper recycling practices.
  • Use proper equipment to transport finished goods to appropriate location.
  • Understand the hazards associated with energy sources in the workplace.
  • Responsible for ensuring accurate documentation, adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices, and executing shift activities.
  • This includes, but is not limited to : work orders, cleaning logs, labor sheets, MSDS labels, Gowning Policy, Smiths Medical Employee Handbook.

  • Understand defects for manufactured products. Responsible for checking products and components for defects, correct assembly, and functionality.
  • Responsible for organizing and scheduling the staff for the shift while ensuring department safety, quality, and output goals are achieved.
  • Diligence with re-occurring activities, such as : ensure first pieces at the beginning of each work order, requisition of components, collect and weigh returns at the end of an order, implement line clearance to start a new order, record documentation to labor sheets, check sheets, visual aids, production sheets, and work orders.
  • Perform cleaning as specified. Audit work orders daily.

  • Read and understand the Operational Procedures for specific products.
  • The Individual

  • Secondary Education (High School) required
  • One to two years’ experience as an assembler or operator in a manufacturing environment required.
  • Must be a highly motivated self-starter with strong people skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are required.
  • Good computer skills (MS Excel, Word, Oracle, etc.) are required.
  • Good working knowledge of the medical device regulatory procedures, lean manufacturing, and manufacturing processes preferred.
  • Good mechanical aptitude required.
  • High detail orientation.
  • Leadership and motivational skills required
  • Ability to read and write, and speak fluently and coherently.
  • Meet all quality, quantity and good manufacturing practices to satisfy customer and Regulatory Affairs requirements.
  • Must be able to perform basic arithmetic (multiplication, addition, subtraction, division) with the use of a calculator or computer.
  • Must have good hand and eye coordination.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to maintain professional composure.
  • Must assist in lean manufacturing projects and implementation.
  • This position is required to assure compliance of Company operations to all applicable laws, regulations and standards, good business practices and company documented procedures (including knowledge of all standards, government occupational health and environmental regulations and statutes related to the site).
  • Engage others, promote, and participate in Environmental, Health, and Safety initiatives, focusing on continuous improvement.
