The Hampshire County Council School Crossing Patrol Service currently has a large team of dedicated community-minded men and women carrying out the important role of ensuring the safety of children on the way to and from school.

We are keen to hear from those members of the community who can demonstrate traffic awareness, a sense of responsibility and are keen to show dedication and commitment in carrying out a very important job to make the roads of Hampshire safer for children.

The job involves working for approximately an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon.

A uniform is provided to protect you against the elements. Some basic IT skills are required.

Job Purpose :

To ensure the safe passage of school children and other pedestrians who are accompanying them at specific sites, in accordance with the Road Traffic Regulation Act, 1981.

Role Responsibilities : Safety :

Safety :

To operate the school crossing patrol point in a safe manner, identifying hazards and the risks they present to children, carers and drivers, maintaining an awareness of traffic movement and speed in order to stop vehicles safely when required and using control measures to ensure safety of all road users.

Customers :

To maintain appropriate relationships with children, in order to control the movement of groups of children at the crossing point, ensuring their personal safety.

Reliability :

Maintain excellent standard of timekeeping to ensure that the crossing point is always covered at the required times.

Information :

Report incidents occurring whilst on duty to the Road Safety team to enable appropriate arrangements to be put in place.

Maintain accurate records of working time and absences and submit these promptly to enable payment of salary.

Safeguarding :

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all Hampshire County Council child and adult protection polices are adhered to and concerns are raised in accordance with these policies.

Role Requirements :

  • Working with the public, particularly children
  • Evidence of appreciation and understanding of equality issues, as it applies to the School Crossing Patrol Service
  • Evidence of clear spoken communication
  • Basic IT skills
  • Ability to work effectively without close supervision
  • Ability to read, understand and apply or follow simple written instructions and information
  • Evidence of confidence and ability to deal with unexpected / difficult situations in an appropriate manner
  • Evidence of being reliable, trustworthy and able to work independently
  • Ability to assess traffic speeds
  • Ability to work in all weathers hot, cold, wind, rain, snow.
  • Evidence of physical fitness and mental alertness
  • Ability to assess traffic speeds
  • Needs to display a level of authority required to stop traffic and direct children
  • Evidence of being a car driver, or a good knowledge of the road
  • Working Conditions :

  • Manual handling of objects up to 5kg on a daily basis
  • Direct supervision of children
  • Lone working
  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions
