We are currently recruiting a Senior Project Manager to join the Arup Project and Programme Management Team in London.
The role is initially to bolster the existing team delivering complex building projects within the science and industry space in both the private and public sector.
We are specifically looking for an individual to fulfil day-to-day project management and contract administration roles on large and complex building projects in excess of £25m construction value.
The role is required to support the Lead Project Manager on building projects over £100m construction value, deputising as needed.
Bring the project team together to meet defined project objectives, even when only limited contractual leverage is available;
Motivate and organise project team members towards a common objective;
Identify stakeholders, determine requirements and expectations and manage their influence on the project;
Maintain excellent relations with clients even during challenging moments, keeping them regularly appraised of the progress of their projects;
Report at Project Board level meetings and answer questions accordingly;
Ensure line manager is kept informed about key issues.
Sets the overall project programme in conjunction with client and Arup in-house planners;
Sets the programme for each major phase of work;
Works with specialist planners to produce a Master Project Programme within scheduling software such MS Project, Asta Power Project or Primavera P6;
Interrogates construction schedules, identifying opportunities for acceleration and improved delivery efficiency.
Manages the design team to deliver the design aligned to the project brief to programme;
Reviews the design programme within the context of the wider project programme and plans ahead to mitigate issues;
Interrogates design schedules, identifying opportunities for acceleration and improved delivery efficiency;
Supports the client in reviewing the design to facilitate value for the client and acts as a critical friend’ to the design team;
Manages Value Engineering exercises, identifying opportunities within the design with the project
Manages the processes involved in estimating, budgeting, and controlling costs;
Manages the change control procedure;
Manages major procurement exercises in compliance with contract and public sector procurement requirements;
Works collaboratively with the cost management and contractor teams to ensure complete transparency of procurement exercises;
Manages monthly payment application and certifies payments, agreeing deductions as justified;
Manage the procurement process for the main construction contract in line with the adopted procurement strategy;
Actively manages project risks and supports the regular undertaking of quantitative risk analysis by risk specialists within the project team.
Monitors progress of the Contractor against the accepted programme and manages the impact of progress on the Masters Project Programme;
Manages compliance with the construction contract and Works Information requirements;
Administers the construction contract utilising appropriate contract mechanisms as required through contract administration software;
Manages the design and supervisor teams during the construction period to review compliance with the Works Information and quality standards;
Reviews and reports on progress against programme on a regular basis, identifying Early Warnings when appropriate.
Identifies & recommends appropriate project delivery strategies to the client;
Maintains a register that allows issues to be easily communicated to others;
Authors monthly client reports identifying key issues, matters for resolution and provides a clear and effective mechanism for exception reporting.
Contracts & compliance
Ensures the project team works in accordance with all regulatory standards;
Develops the main contract procurement strategy and manages the procurement process;
Administers the pre-construction service agreement (PCSA) and professional services contracts on behalf of the client;
Manages procedures to deliver the required quality at all stages of the project in accordance with contract requirements.
Requirements and skills
Professional qualification in a construction industry related discipline;
Excellent communication and relationship building skills within a large project team environment;
Ability to build relationships with clients and deliver excellent client care within a complex stakeholder environment;
Excellent team player with an ability to bring together individuals to achieve a common objective; self-starting attitude and an ability to work independently as well as part of a large project team;
Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, the development of suitable solutions and the implementation of these solutions;
Experience of delivering complex science and healthcare facilities from a client project management perspective;
Experience should have been gained on projects of at least £25m construction value, ideally with a mix of refurbishment and new build projects is desired;
Experience of the design, procurement and construction phases of a project is required, experience of a package procurement approach would be advantageous;
Experience of project delivery within the life science and healthcare industries would be preferred, with experience of high-containment facilities within the bio-science space advantageous;
Experience of administering construction contracts is required, with preference given to NEC3 ECC experience;
Experience of working with main contractors working under pre-construction services agreements;
UK Government SC security clearance, or ability to obtain SC clearance is required.
