Training For The Role
You'll start with your initial military training which will teach you how to be a soldier - this will cover everything from fieldcraft to how to handle a rifle.
If you join as a Junior Soldier (under 17 years 5 months), you’ll do a 49-week basic military training course at Harrogate.
If you join as a Regular Soldier (over 17 years 1 month), you’ll do the regular 14-week adult basic training.
Then it’s off to Larkhill for 15 weeks to become a qualified Gunner. Next is the 13-week Surveillance and Target Acquisition Patrols course.
You learn medical, communication and patrol skills and fitness and navigation, and train on live firing ranges. Next, you learn advanced photography and how to call in artillery strikes.
SERE (Survive, Evade, Resist and Extract) training teaches you how to survive in the field and avoid capture. Then you’re ready to join a six-man patrol and go on operations anywhere in the world.
