The Aerospace, Defence, Security and Technology (ADS&T) Division of Atkins, part of SNC-Lavalin, is at the leading edge of delivering Resilience Engineering & Sustainable Critical Systems across multiple disciplines and industries.

Our clients are demanding support in a variety of both traditional and pioneering areas, in which we provide holistic services, requiring a diverse range of experience with an understanding of Safety Engineering in the broadest sense, whilst increasingly considering Digital Twins, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Analytics to name a few.

Our growing team offers a range of independent and unbiased advice in engineering, technical and strategic services to a wide breadth of markets and clients.

Due to strong growth, particularly in the nuclear sector, client demand for our services is expanding. The specialist technical nature of these services requires an informed and focussed approach to business development and bidding.

Our safety-critical software and EC&I team is a thriving part of the Resilience Engineering Practice area providing consultancy and engineering services to a range of clients in industries such as Nuclear Power, Defence, Rail and Aerospace.

Our team works across critical and novel engineering projects at the cutting edge of technology and addresses all stages of the system development lifecycle.

The systems we work on with typically have a significant programmable element and are used in a safety or security critical context.

We are recognised thought leaders in provision of software assurance for safety critical software.

Due to strong growth, particularly in the nuclear sector, we are looking to expand our safety-critical software and EC&I team in response to client demand.

Atkins’ recognises that the specialist technical nature of these services requires an informed and focussed approach to business development and bidding.

Your purpose :

We require a Business Development Manager for Safety Critical Software and EC&I Services.

Successful candidates will :

  • Take on a leading role in the growth of our Safety Critical Software and Control and Instrumentation business.
  • Engage with clients to understand their needs and challenges and to develop successful, sustainable working relationships.
  • Identify where Atkins’ current technical capability can be exploited to deliver increased business.
  • Contribute to identification of opportunities.
  • Develop bidding strategies and lead bid development; turn opportunities into contracted work.
  • Lead and support the development of winning bids for established and new clients.
  • Build and maintain excellent, sustainable client relationships; and help shape the future capabilities.
  • We will require to maintain business success and growth.
  • Location : Flexible, any UK Atkins sites. A home-based worker would also be considered but some travel to Atkins sites and client sites will be an essential part of the role.
  • Your purpose :

  • Liaise between Atkins technical leads and Atkins Client Account Managers to identify business growth opportunities.
  • Engage with clients to understand their needs and challenges and to develop successful working relationships.
  • Lead and support the development of winning bids for established and new clients.
  • Identify where Atkins’ current technical capability can be exploited to deliver increased business and inform how Atkins should develop future capabilities to meeting client future needs.
  • Help shape the future capabilities we will require to meet client future needs and maintain business success and growth.

  • Essential -

  • A proven track record of successful client relationship management experience.
  • Able to understand client’s challenges, identify where Atkins’ has relevant capability to solve those challenges and support the client to develop statements of requirements where necessary.
  • Able to prepare winning bids.
  • Able to liaise between clients, and Atkins’ technical delivery and business leads, balancing business priorities.
  • Good understanding of the software and / or EC&I systems development lifecycle, probably gained through a background in technical delivery.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, commensurate with the needs of the role.
  • Comfortable talking to clients in technical terms.
  • Excellent collaboration, interpersonal and networking skills.
  • A flexible approach, applying your experience to a diverse range of situations.
  • Desirable -

  • An established network to help to grow our business.
  • Prior experience in a consultancy environment.
  • Educated to Degree level in a relevant engineering or scientific field, or equivalent working experience in senior roles.
  • Location :

    We would be flexible to successful applicants being based at any UK Atkins sites. However, to aid collaboration we would prefer candidates to be based at an Atkins office with an ADS&T team presence.

    These are : Aldershot, Bristol, Silchester, Derby, Manchester, Epsom.

    Our flexible working arrangements mean that a significant part of the week can often be worked from home, but some travel to Atkins’ sites and client sites for meetings, collaboration, mentoring and networking will be an essential part of the role.
