We’re looking for an individual who is excited by the opportunity to join our data privacy team. You will help us ensure that The Economist Group and its employees and representatives understand and comply with applicable data protection laws and regulations across the world.
You will work closely with stakeholders across the organisation on projects already underway and planned to ensure that privacy by design principles are baked in, the right agreements, policies, and controls are in place, and that risks are reviewed, assessed, and managed.

Check / audit compliance to regulations
Ensure The Economist Group complies with global data privacy principles. We operate a global business and many privacy regulations apply, but the most relevant ones for us are the UK Data Protection Act, GDPR, and CCPA.
Assess the level of compliance and privacy-related risks within Group businesses. Recommend changes and confirm recommendations have been put in place
Give Advice
Advise our colleagues on processing personal data in the geographic locations where TEG operates and on the requirements and implications of local privacy laws
Identify and provide advice on data privacy risks
Identify and provide advice on regulatory requirements that apply to communications between the Group and its customers and potential customers
Maintain records
Maintain our Records of Processing Activities documentation - including documentation of Legal Basis for the Group’s processing of personal data
Ensure that data privacy is appropriately addressed in the documentation of all systems processing personal data.
Keep up with regulations
Maintain your knowledge of developments in global data privacy issues and legislation and make sure our colleagues have the information they need on these topics.
With the Group’s Legal team, assess any updates or changes to legislation for impact on Group business and advise information risk stakeholders.
Handle communications & complaints
Manage communications and interaction with the relevant Data Privacy Regulators such as the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, from colleagues and the public.
Undertake reporting / remedial action as required
Maintain records of incident investigations, remedial actions, and following up on recommendations
Provide Awareness for staff
Ensure TEG staff and representatives are aware of data privacy principles, how to apply them, and their responsibilities
Advise all staff arranging for data to be processed on behalf of the company by third parties, on the statutory requirements of data privacy to be included in contracts
Experience, skills and professional attributes
The ideal skills and attributes for this role include :
University degree (or equivalent)
CIPP / E, CIPM, ISEB Certificate or equivalent Data Privacy qualification
Good attention to detail
Ability to take the initiative, work to deadlines and manage multiple priorities
Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
Positive can do’ attitude and a determination to succeed
Ability to influence and engage at all levels of the organization
Experience with managing a small team
Experience with risk management, compliance, audit
Experience in publishing or media organizations
