What you’ll be doing

Being a Resident Companion’ doesn’t just mean helping residents to remain as active and independent as possible while respecting their rights of choice, privacy and dignity.

It means having fun and laughter with them and listening to their stories of a past life, keeping them upbeat throughout the day.

And, it means working flexibly to help them explore new interests, engage in physical exercise and activities and make sure they enjoy themselves in a stimulating and homely environment.

Put simply, it means making a difference. A real difference and really stepping into that Companion’ role whilst relatives aren’t around to visit.

What you’ll need

A genuine passion for caring for others, you may have looked after an elderly relative or friend before. More important though is your kind-hearted nature, your belief in teamwork and your ability to use your initiative and imagination, follow instructions and bring a smile to the residents at Care Uk.

You’ll be comfortable talking to, and working with, people from different professions and above all, you will have a natural ability to help make the lives of others more fulfilling and want to work in an environment where the work can be hard, but also fun and rewarding.

  • Where you'll work
  • Grangewood is a light and airy care home where you’ll discover a strong community atmosphere and gold standard care.

Grangewood is a purpose-built care home in the village of Shiney Row, close to Houghton-le-Spring in Tyne and Wear. We provide high quality residential and respite care for older people, including people living with Alzheimer's and other types of dementia.

We’re very proud of having been awarded Sunderland City Council’s gold standard for quality care. The awards cover a range of criteria, including offering residents a healthy, nutritious diet, delivering high standards of hygiene and health and safety, and providing a range of activities to promote residents’ all-round health and wellbeing.

When you first visit Grangewood you’ll notice the strong feeling of community presence. The majority of our residents were born in the local area and have lived here all their lives.

Most of our team members, some of whom have been here since we opened in 2005, are also local. So often a new resident will move in and immediately be among old friends and familiar faces.
