The Rail and Geotechnical Business unit consists of over 875 people, with people located in virtually every office within the UK.

The rail part of the business includes Network Rail, TfL and HS2 amongst its biggest clients, with the geotechnical business serving virtually every operating unit within BIAF as well as cross line of activities into the nuclear and mining sectors.

The Birmingham office has a busy Rail team playing a key role in growing the rail business for the company. With recent increase in the portfolio of projects that we need to deliver, we are now looking to expand the team.

This is a fundamental and key position in the Rail-Civilstechnical team which will suit a committed and ambitious individual looking to be the Discipline Lead as manager of the Rail Civils discipline in Birmingham.

Taking the Civils Discipline Lead role in Birmingham for Rail projects would include the following activities :

The Rail Civils Discipline Lead will work with Heads of Discipline to provide integrated support to the organisation. This support includes :

  • Tutoring of people within the team.
  • Input to the key hire programme for that discipline across the UK.
  • Implementing, establishing and developing standards and common processes
  • Identifying and sharing best practices.
  • Assisting the Head of Discipline’s to maintain discipline competence and resource availability in a way that provides support to the Managers of Technical Services to optimise billability for that discipline.
  • The Discipline Lead will be responsible for leading and managing people within their team to ensure the appropriate quality of service, including cost and schedule performance.

    They will also be responsible for the tutoring, mentoring and directing of all people within the group.

    Key relationships will include :

  • The Client’s Technical representative
  • Project Managers
  • Technical Consultants
  • Qualifications

    Candidates will be expected to :

  • Be someone who has delivered a project to scope and no more (know the acceptable minimums)
  • Be experienced in producing designs fit for the next stage and to something that clients value; Option Selection that enables an AIP brief, AIP for Detailed Design, Detailed Design for AFC, AFC for minimal construction interface.
  • Have good task management and budget control skills along with high-billability.
  • Be experienced in improving team performance and skills sets whilst delivering projects to plan and budget.
  • Be able to shape and develop a team from existing, highlight SWOT and manage them towards improved performance over a 2 year period.
  • Be a visible leader, respected technically and a proven record of delivering excellence and value on projects.
  • Be willing and able to travel to align with the UK wide team and for project delivery.
  • Be able to deliver in front of Clients & Contractors, then train and coach deputies to do so over a reasonable period.
  • Have an awareness of what a Contractor expects and how to manage to the acceptable minimum, then any additional is considered as value.
  • Be flexible to undertake other activities related to multi-disciplinary Rail projects as directed by the Engineering Heads of Discipline.
  • Essential :

  • Qualified Chartered Engineer (CEng).
  • Previous experience of rail engineering projects.
  • Wider experience from other sectors, including transport interchanges, Buildings & Civils and site-wide Civils and structures for infrastructure developments.
  • Must have some experience of significant multi-discipline design projects where Civil Engineering was the lead discipline.
