This role sits within the Financial Industry Advisory Services (FIAS) practice in Europe based in Alvarez & Marsal’s London office.

A&M FIAS comprises three core areas of expertise; Bank Restructuring / Credit Advisory, Regulatory Advisory and Performance Improvement services primarily focusing on financial institutions, private equity investors, regulatory / resolution authorities and insurance / wealth managers based in Europe.

Currently financial institutions are facing a more challenging business and operating environment faced by stricter regulatory / risk regime, transformation / digital agenda (requiring more disruptive approach regards to cost reduction), slow revenue growth and banking consolidation.

A&M’s FIAS professionals advise clients on these specific challenges and have worked on some of the world’s most high-profile cases in a rapidly transforming financial institution landscape.

Our European / global team is comprised of seasoned banking advisory executives from diverse backgrounds including former senior financial institution regulators & highly skilled consultants.

The Purpose of the role :

A&M FIAS is looking to hire a Senior Associate / Director level executive to work in a growing team advising clients specifically on credit and loan advisory matters e.

g., buy-side and sell-side due-diligence, loan life cycle review, etc. The role often requires working with colleagues from regulatory, valuation, performance improvement and transaction advisory teams.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to use your financial services and / or consultancy experience to become involved in a hands on’ high performance team.

As a valued member of the FIAS London team, you will work on a variety of projects, leveraging your financial services industry knowledge and your experience of credit origination, portfolio management, credit risk or loan restructuring / NPL work-

out to support the senior team members in managing large and complex engagements. A very good knowledge and capability to build bespoke loan portfolio / financial models is also a key requirement.

In addition, you will contribute / lead work streams on large programs but potentially lead smaller projects, leveraging your financial services knowhow and skill set in analyzing the status quo and developing sound solutions either from an external point of view or in collaborative settings with your client organization.

As part of the FIAS Team, you will be working closely with Managing Directors, Senior Directors, other Directors and junior staff members.

You will benefit from constant exposure to the senior members of the team and gain on the job’ learning and development, leveraging their substantial experience.

You will also be involved in managing workstream(s) with teams of junior staff and be required to coach junior staff on-the-job.

In joining a growing business, you will also have the opportunity to be involved in business development activities, where the team discuss new opportunities, the development of innovative offerings for our market and the drafting of thought leadership papers.

You will be actively involved in these business development discussions and will be an integrated part of the wider FIAS team in London / Europe.

Responsibilities

You will support the delivery of bank restructuring and credit advisory related projects within financial institutions involving effective management of balance sheets (NPL management, credit risk management, implementation of key regulatory directive, etc.

plus work with potential buyers (or sellers) who acquire (or sell) a range of performing and non-performing assets in the market-place.

Assignments may range from advising on credit risk management, implementing new regulation, working together on the development of strategic plans, or advising a PE fund during a buy / sell side process.

To this effectively, you will need to :

  • Have had a strong exposure to clients, be able to deal with top executives in complex situations;
  • Manage consultant teams and interactions with clients;
  • Be an action-oriented self-starter with strong analytical skills and entrepreneurial flair;
  • Demonstrate leadership to drive credit / restructuring approach;
  • Be comfortable working independently as well as in a high performing team;
  • Interpret client requirements and present it in a clear and meaningful way, including how this could impact strategy, revenue streams or wider business issues;
  • In joining a growing business, you will have the opportunity be involved in business development activities and will be part of project pipeline, resourcing, marketing and business development initiatives
  • Essential :

  • Relevant experience in financial services advisory (ideally from a Big 4 Professional services firm or from the Banking industry itself or from a regulatory background or from the private equity community), covering either first line of defense banking activities (e.
  • g. lending origination, portfolio management, restructuring / work-out) or second line of defense banking activities (credit risk management, provisioning / impairment, collateral management);
  • Highly exposed to top management, with leading financial services players in the UK & European market with established relevant experience in this space;
  • A high-grade degree qualification from a top tier university;
  • Mix of hard and soft skills, drive and leadership, ability to generate impact, assertiveness;
  • Strong project management capabilities, stakeholder management skills at senior levels;
  • Strong ability to conceptualize, summarize, and provide key messages to clients and / or senior levels;
  • Strong managerial skills, with ability to distribute workload among team members
  • Native / fluent English language skills are essential along with excellent writing skills.
  • Excellent financial modelling (Excel) and presentation (Powerpoint) skills;
  • Willingness to travel regularly (mainly within Europe);
  • EU citizenship or right to work in the EU.
  • Desirable :

  • Knowledge of relevant EU regulatory initiatives, e.g. NPL guidelines, Definition of Default, Prudential Backstop, etc.
  • Experience with loan portfolio reviews, loan loss estimation models, valuations, loan restructuring and recovery solutions, bank performance improvement, merger integration initiatives;
  • Experience in bank restructuring / resolution cases (e.g. good bank / bad banks), loan due diligence projects or credit regulatory reviews
  • Additional qualification levels (such as MSc or MBA) would be preferred;
  • Programming language skills;
  • Additional European languages are highly desirable.
