Fire Engineer - London, Manchester or Edinburgh

The opportunity

Ready for a new challenge? Our busy UK Fire Engineering team can offer a plethora of interesting projects in the UK, Middle East, and elsewhere.

Recent and current projects encompass iconic museums, premier football stadia, historic refurbishments, higher education campuses, masterplans, high rise, and much more.

You'll be part of a UK team comprising around 20 fire engineers across London, Manchester and Edinburgh, but also collaborating closely with Fire Engineering colleagues in other regions such as the US, Germany and the Middle East, both in the context of projects and knowledge sharing.

Whilst the role will initially be home-based, we are ideally looking for candidates will be able to reach either our London, Manchester or Edinburgh offices.

Your responsibilities will be highly varied, but can typically be expected to comprise...

  • Work with Senior and Associate Engineers to project manage small to medium fire engineering projects.
  • Develop your skills toward becoming lead fire engineer on small to medium scale projects, assist with the development of fire strategies for large scale projects.
  • Inform and support the building design aspirations, functionality and architectural form throughout the design process

  • Become involved with client care and general consultancy on both small- and large-scale projects.
  • Become responsible for the financial performance of small to medium scale projects, including invoicing and financial monitoring of projects.
  • Represent BuroHappold Fire Engineering at design team meetings, both internal and externally.
  • Build knowledge to be able to identify and specify appropriate fixed fire protection systems, i.e. automatic fire detection and / or suppression to support fire engineering design solutions.
  • Carry out and review fire engineering calculations including smoke modelling and evacuation analysis from simple hand calculations to complex 3D computational modelling (previous CFD experience is welcome but not essential).

    As an experienced Fire Engineering professional with extensive experience in the UK market, we would expect that you will be able to demonstrate :

  • A higher education qualification in engineering or in a fire safety related subject
  • Demonstrable, relevant hands-on’ professional experience.
  • Excellent consultancy skills; Good communication and experience in dealing with difficult situations, negotiation and understanding the differing needs of our clients and within stakeholder groups.
  • Confident, proactive character, with a track record or the ability to taking the lead in challenging situations.
  • The ability of identify, develop and grow profitable commercial relationships with client
  • Capability of working alone or as part of a larger team on multiple projects with other professional engineers, often not under their direct control.
  • Developing expertise in delivering fire safety engineering solutions in a multi-disciplinary environment with solid experience in developing fire strategies, undertaking engineering analysis and applying performance based designs
  • An aptitude for problem solving
  • Willingness to travel.
