We are seeking a full-time Research Assistant to join the Hypersonics Research Group at the Department of Engineering Science (Oxford Thermofluids Institute).
The post is for a fixed-term of two years initially, with potential extension.
The successful applicant will undertake the day to day operation of two of the Oxford hypersonic wind tunnels : the T6 Stalker tunnel and the High Density Tunnel.
These facilities are both part of the National Wind Tunnel Facility (NWTF) and see heavy use across the spectrum of testing, from fundamental research to applied industrial contracts.
The successful applicant will work closely with researchers from our own group as well as external clients (both academic and industrial) to achieve efficient test campaigns and deliver high quality results.
The Tunnel Engineer will primarily be in charge of conducting the daily operations of the tunnels, carrying out longer term maintenance and calibration tasks, and supporting the usual activities of experimenters within the laboratory space.
Additionally, the operator will use down time of the facility to contribute to the design and application of upgrades to the wind tunnels and supporting experimental infrastructure to extend their capabilities and / or increase efficiency.
You should possess an undergraduate degree in a relevant field and / or have relevant experience in operation of a wind tunnel or similar test facility for academic research, research & development, or test & evaluation.
Previous experience in undertaking both mechanical engineering design and fundamental flow measurements is essential. You should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively on projects with a wide variety of colleagues and stakeholders.
Good organizational skills, an initiative towards problem solving, and the ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience are also required.
