We are seeking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated and independent Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work within the international project Scale-aware sea-ice project SASIP () funded and supported by the Schmidt Futures foundation ().
SASIP aims at developing a truly innovative, scale-aware continuum sea ice model for climate research; one that faithfully represents sea ice dynamics and thermodynamics and that is physically sound, data-adaptive, highly parallelized and computationally efficient.
The postholder will work on Data Assimilation for Parameter Estimation : Sub-grid and Sea Ice Ocean Coupling Parameterizations.
The postholder will use and develop ensemble DA methods to optimize the continuum-scale parameterizations for the Maxwell-Elasto-Brittle (MEB) rheology and to equip SASIP with DA codes and expertise to perform parameter estimation and identification.
The postholder will primarily study appropriate ensemble Kalman filter and smoother but will also consider hybrid DA and machine learning approaches.
This recruitment is one of the two concomitantly happening at University of Reading within SASIP, the other being for a PDRA working on DA for sea-ice model using discontinuous Galerkin methods.
The two PDRAs will interact very closely and constitute the core of SASIP working group at University of Reading. See separate advert for the other PDRA position.
The post holder will be based at the Dept of Meteorology, University of Reading and will be part of the Data Assimilation Research Centre (DARC, ) enjoying an international, diverse and stimulating research environment.
The postholder will be also affiliated at the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO, ) a distributed centre of over 100 scientists in the UK.
Candidates with a knowledge of, or possessing a PhD on, data assimilation and / or sea-ice physics and its numerical modelling will be given priority.
