The UCL Institute of Education (IOE) is a world-leading centre for research and teaching in social science and education, ranked number one for education worldwide in the 2021 QS World University Rankings for the eighth year running.

Within the IOE, SRI is one of the largest centres of multi-disciplinary, social science research and teaching in London. It is home to over 80 academics based in five renowned research centres.

The Social Research Institute is seeking to appoint a new Professorial Director of the Thomas Coram Research Unit (TCRU).

TCRU is a leading multi-disciplinary and policy-oriented research centre conducting research of relevance to the well-being of children, young people, families and those who work with them.

Established in 1973, TCRU has a strong tradition of collaborative and methodologically innovative research drawing on diverse sources of funding.

  • It works across a range of disciplines including psychology, sociology, social policy and social anthropology with current research spanning three main substantive areas : Childhood & Children’s wellbeing : services and practices;
  • Gender, Families and work; Migration, mobility and diversity.You will provide strategic direction and leadership to the work of the Thomas Coram Research Unit, including the development and promotion of research, teaching and consultancy work;
  • aiming to achieve high levels of international and national policy impact and influence. In addition you will join SRI’s Senior Leadership Team supporting SRI’s strategic developments, participate in teaching within your area of expertise, including supervision of doctoral students.

    Key RequirementsYou will be an internationally renowned social science scholar conducting policy relevant research on children and family life in one of TCRU’s substantive areas.

    Publishing in high impact national and international peer-reviewed journals with a strong record of funded research and policy impact you will have the proven ability to provide academic leadership, and a commitment to high-quality teaching and methodological innovation.
