To provide holistic end-to-end management and leadership for the assigned product line. Based within the Hemel Hempstead located Centre of Excellence for Explosives / Narcotics and Chemical Trace material detection -
a technology relied upon by the world’s leading Airports, Border checkpoints, first responders (Police) and the Military.
The Product Manager works closely with Sales, Strategy and Marketing, Operations, Service, Scientific Research teams to ensure new products are launched on time, on spec and on budget and that existing products maintain their competitive positioning to maximise both customer satisfaction and ensure RoI matches the original business case
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for all Product Management duties for the assigned product portfolio, as informed by the Smiths Detection Product Lifecycle Process
Review market and internal business data to support development of an overall strategic approach and business justification
Actively participate in capability strategy working groups, leading efforts related to assigned product portfolio pushing the art of the possible
Become the Voice of the Customer (VoC) by interface with the customer community and key industry stakeholders in close collaboration with the Sales and Service function
Responsible for capability market research efforts, collecting, analysing and presenting in the most appropriate way -
information about potential markets, customer’s needs (VoC), competitors and competitive products, as well as on any change in market dynamics.
Develop and communicate market, capability, and product roadmaps to provide guidance to the business on opportunities, needs, and plans
Develop and present product strategies and commercial justifications to guide major investment decisions based on the market research data
Engage internally to ensure that the agreed roadmap deliverables are achieved.
Ensure that new products, features and services are taken to market effectively and meets the business case.
Continuously monitor their particular product line and capability area, reporting on any business success-critical changes
Participate in efforts to improve the efficiency and efficacy of product management activities and practices
Provide subject matter expertise into the business to all functions of the business
Comply with and ensure compliance with Company health, safety and environmental policies
Comply with all applicable export control and security regulations

Experienced in identifying viable product proportions, formulating commercial justifications and driving through development into product launch
Skilled at post launch product management, monitoring and intervening to ensure launched products adhere to the performance identified in the business case

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
Working knowledge of SAP (tool) preferred but not essential
Fluent in spoken and written English is essential, other languages would be a bonus
Required Skills and Experience
Scientific / Engineering degree, or Business and Marketing degree, or considerable relevant experience
Experience in product management with a proven track record of delivering complex hardware, software and service solutions within Defence or a heavily regulated market
Broad experience and understanding of multiple aspects of a business including but not limited to Customer Service, Manufacturing, Operations, Purchasing, Sales, Marketing, Research and Product Development.
Experience productizing solutions for Defence ideally or Airports, Public Safety and the CBRNE / Trace market in particular is preferred but not essential
Experience in analytical instrumentation or chemical / explosives / narcotics detection is preferred but not essential
Ability to obtain SC clearance is essential
Effective communication and influencing skills across organizational layers, including articulating technically complex material in a manner appropriate to the audience is essential
