About Cazoo :

Our mission is to transform the car buying experience across the UK and Europe by providing better selection, flexibility, transparency, convenience and peace of mind.

Our aim is to make getting your next car no different to ordering any other product online today, where consumers can simply and seamlessly purchase, finance or subscribe to a car entirely online for delivery or collection in as little as 72 hours.

Cazoo was founded in 2018 by serial entrepreneur Alex Chesterman OBE, has a highly experienced management team and is backed by some of the leading global technology investors.

Summary of role :

Intelligent use of data is critical to our success and we have built out a strong data function focused on this goal. We now need someone to take our data science capabilities to the next level across a wide range of interesting and challenging domains.

As Principal Data Scientist you will lead the data science team at Cazoo. You will drive the technical development and implementation of data science projects, making sure we deliver practical applications that lead directly to improvements in the business.

Data is central to everything we do, but our primary area of focus is on improving our efficiency and accuracy in identifying a vehicle, and optimally pricing a vehicle in different channels, markets and contexts.

You will also work across different domains including operational and logistics simulation and optimisation.

Our view of data science is that it is more than just machine learning. To be clear, you will be heavily involved in machine learning applications, and most importantly, driving them into production - however, building out intelligent tools and services that help individuals and teams make better decisions is equally important.

What you’ll be doing :

We are looking for an agile creative thinker who relishes bringing data to life. Strong technical data science and data engineering skills are a prerequisite but your ability to practically apply your skills, communicate your findings and drive implementation in the business will set you apart.

Your key responsibilities will include :

  • Actively managing and mentoring the data science team, making sure we follow shared best practices and meet our delivery targets.
  • Staying hands-on to keep current with the fast moving data science technical landscape and to maintain credibility with the team.
  • Managing the road map and communicating findings and actions to both business and technical audiences, working collaboratively across functions to ensure timely implementation.
  • Essential skills and attributes required for success :

  • Quantitative degree in Maths, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Applied Statistics, BioInformatics, Physics, Engineering or equivalent field.
  • Extensive programming experience in Python with standard version control, familiarity with Linux / UNIX, extensive experience in working with SQL databases and flexibility in learning new languages and tools as needed.
  • Extensive experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches from project inception and scoping all the way through to final delivery.
  • Extensive practical experience in relevant machine learning and statistical modelling techniques such as linear / logistic regression, tree-based ensemble models and clustering and neighbourhood problems etc.
  • Extensive practical experience in monitoring and maintaining machine learning models in production, defining when re-calibration is required and rolling out updated models.
  • Experience managing and mentoring data scientists, managing stakeholder relationships and building road-maps for deliverables
  • Experience making data tell a story through data presentation, visualisation tools and techniques, proof of concept / prototypes etc.
  • Ability to work effectively across functions, disciplines and levels.
  • Enthusiasm to do things the right way from the ground up.
  • Adaptable and positive, can do attitude.
  • Extensive working experience or academic experience in a relevant field
  • Desirable :

  • Experience with MLOps frameworks, in particular tensor flow extended and MLFlow
  • Experience implementing optimisation solutions
  • Experience with recommendation engines
  • Experience with time series data / forecasting models
  • Experience with Neural Networks for image classification
  • Experience with standard software engineering practices such as :
  • CI / CD style development using Jenkins / circleci or similar
  • Infrastructure as code (Terraform preferable)
  • Experience with AWS and GCP cloud providers and services.
  • Useful info :

Our selection process will typically involve a chat on the phone, a 1-hour multiple choice knowledge test, and a couple hours of interviews where you’ll have a chance to meet the team.

We are committed to ensuring accessibility in our interviews. From a physical disability standpoint, we have ensured our office is accessible but please do let us know if you have any issues or requests.

Similarly, we want to ensure neurodiverse candidates feel confident and comfortable with our interview process but appreciate there is not a one size fits all’ approach to this.

As such, please do let us know if you need any changes made to the interview process to accommodate yourself well.

In your application, please feel free to note which pronouns you use (For example - she / her / hers, he / him / his, they / them / theirs, etc).
