Support Assistant

Salary : £20,129 per annum

Open Ended

The main purpose of the role is to act as part of the team who provides mail, porterage and out of hours Reception services to UKRI and associated organisations based within Polaris House.

The main tasks carried out by a Support Assistant are :

  • Work to a shift pattern which may include some weekend working.
  • Sort and distribute mail within the building. This may include unloading of vehicles using forklift truck and booking goods in.
  • Handle, seal and despatch mail to external organisations including the use of courier services.
  • Carry out local deliveries using pool cars.
  • Deliver and monitor levels of stationery, keeping records of items delivered.
  • Prepare meeting rooms make changes to layouts and housekeeping duties.
  • Assist in the movement of furniture and large items of waste.
  • Provide out of hours cover to the Reception desk. Act as Reception staff processing visitors using an electronic visitor system.
  • Open up building at the start of the day and make the building ready for staff.
  • Lock up the building at the end of the working day and ensure the security of the site is maintained.
  • Use CCTV system to monitor building security whilst on Reception duties.
  • Operate intruder and fire detection alarm systems.
  • Receive and reply to emails on behalf of the team, assigning / completing administration tasks as and when required.
  • Assist JBOS team with emergency situations i.e. Support staff have specific tasks to carry out during building evacuations.
  • Ad hoc administration duties such as car park checks.
  • Knowledge, skill and experience


  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Pragmatic, flexible work ethic.
  • Ability to react calmly and quickly under pressure.
  • Ability to read postal addresses and simple instructions.
  • Ability to operate machinery such as a franking machine.
  • Ability to be flexible over working shifts and extra hours.
  • Able to carry out a range of manual duties (including lifting up to 15kgs weight).
  • General PC skills, including a good working knowledge of MS Office packages (Word, Excel, Outlook), and use of the internet.

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
  • Experience of working in a post room.
  • Knowledge of working a forklift truck or willingness to undertake training.
  • Current First Aid certificate or willingness to undertake training.
  • Current Driving Licence.
