Opportunities are available to train at racing stables throughout the country. The Northern Racing College offers a range of courses and instruction to prepare trainees for work in the horse racing industry.
Once training has been successfully completed there are good prospects for the future in this specialised work area.
The 18 week Stable Staff Foundation Course will comprise of 12 weeks residential at the NRC and 6 weeks on work experience minimum.
The course is open to complete beginners with no previous experience with horses and prepares learners for work in the racing industry.
During this initial period of training learners will undertake such activities as carrying out yard duties, looking after racehorses, riding out, attending lectures and studying for their technical certificate and functional skills qualifications.
Functional Skills Qualifications and a First Aid Certificate. Following the 6 week work experience, those learners with the right aptitude will be secured an apprenticeship placement in a racing stable, where with the support of NRC’s roving instructors, they can go on to achieve their Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and their Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and Management.
Requirements : You need to have ambition, motivation & a good general level of fitness. You must enjoy working outdoors.
No previous experience or formal qualifications are required.
Training : Every trainee will gain the practical skills, expertise & knowledge required for the job. Training is supplied by qualified instructors & takes place on’ and off’ the job, in the classroom & the racing yard.
During initial 18 week Traineeship training will gain a Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care. Once employed with an employer will be studying for an Apprenticeship including Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care or Advanced Apprenticeship including Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care and Management.
