About the role
It goes without saying you’ll maintain consistently high standards of displays presentation and cleanliness throughout all public and behind the scenes areas of displays.
This also includes ensuring consistently high standards of animal husbandry and spotless record keeping aligned with company welfare guidelines, zoo license and veterinary requirements and through the routine maintenance of the life support systems operation.
You’ll play a key role in the continual development of the displays on site in line with the displays development plan and you will thrive on and be able to work comfortably under pressure in a challenging and fast moving environment.
Taking ownership of creating new displays, you’ll be working to a set budget whilst managing your time effectively. You’ll also supervise, and support conservation and research as guided by the company, including but not limited to supporting student projects on site and outreach projects.
In addition to this you’ll be an ambassador for SEA LIFE Brighton, leading from the front promoting the core brand values - including a strong Health & Safety culture - every day to inspire, coach and motivate others.
A diving qualification and first aid at work certificate (or the ability to obtain them) are essential.
This is a full-time permanent contract and includes working a regular, fair share of weekends and bank holidays as required.
Providing emergency call out cover on a roster basis and having the ability to work flexible hours is essential.
You’ll have a genuine passion for animal welfare with relevant knowledge of both freshwater and marine fish, jellyfish, and reptiles.
You’ll also have a good understanding of aquarium animal care on a large aquarium scale including but not limed to daily husbandry, quarantine treatments and acclimation procedures.
Experience within public aquariums involving maintenance, plumbing and operation of large life support systems is essential as this is a key part of the aquarist role in SEA LIFE Brighton.
You’ll also need a strong understanding of the fundamentals of water chemistry as applied to an aquarium environment and an ability to quickly identify and resolve any environmental issues.
In addition to this we are looking for someone who is an enthusiastic team player, ready to join our passionate and committed animal care team.
Comfortable working in a fast moving and what can be at times a challenging environment where flexibility and resilience play a key factor, you will show high attention to detail and a practical ability to create wow’ displays with a working knowledge of the correct use of, theming, lighting and water movement to deliver this.
You will have the opportunity to actively create and develop amazing and inspiring displays for our guests, so the ability to demonstrate how you have delivered this in the past and show an understanding of what great looks like is a must!
Skills in animal training and enrichment are desirable too, and a love for conservation and the wild environment is essential.
You’ll also have a degree level qualification in animal care, marine biology or equivalent.
You’ll enjoy engaging with our guests when you are out and about in the centre, sharing stories and facts about all the creatures within our care.
