Purpose of the Job

We are looking to hire a senior legal counsel, a general banking lawyer from in an in-house financial services team based in England, with previous experience of topics relevant to the private banking business.

This is an excellent opportunity to join an established legal team, which services Brown Shipley, the UK subsidiary, within the Quintet Group.

The role, along with the Head of Legal for Brown Shipley, will provide legal advice to the UK entity. The role sits within the Group Legal Function and the role will collaborate closely with lawyers across the Group Legal Team on Group Legal projects and matters which are performed in the main by Group Legal Specialist Teams.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide good quality legal advice on a broad range of topics to enable Brown Shipley to identify, manage and report legal risk.
  • Proactively engage with stakeholders to demonstrate value add of having a lawyer involved early with key matters concerning client management.
  • Manage own workload of general private banking / wealth management work
  • Take responsibility for a number of legal topics
  • Input into a number of transform the bank topics from a legal perspective for Brown Shipley
  • Knowledge and Experience

    Mid to senior level qualified English lawyer with in-house financial services experience, ideally in private banking and wealth management topics, in the UK

    Familiar with legal and regulatory risks applicable to a Wealth Manager and Bank in the UK

    Being able to advise on lending topics relevant to the Bank

    Supporting the complaints departments on complaints which need legal input and managing any litigation claims which are raised against the bank

    Familiar with advising on the Data Protection Act at a high level

    Familiar with working independently on own initiative to manage workload and as part of a small Legal team in the UK

    Be able to collaborate with colleagues from across the Group Legal Function on topics where advice from a UK legal input is required

  • Be able to collaborate with colleagues from the Group Legal teams of 1. Cross Border; 2, Litigation and Contentious Regulatory;
  • and 3. Global Products and Services who provide specialist support to the Bank across the Group and the lawyers who work in Legal teams within other subsidiaries / branches of the Group

    Effective verbal and written communication skills, and comfortable presenting solutions with senior stakeholders which are easily understood

    Technical Skills

    UK qualified lawyer with at least 5 years’ relevant experience working in an in-house team in private banking / wealth management sector

    Languages Skills

    Fluent in English and French / German an advantage but not required
