We arelooking for a Technical Director to join our busy and exciting central Manchester Studio, who are currently working on some extremely diverse andchallenging projects.

The Technical Director will play a leading role in providing design leadership and discipline integration ofprojects delivered by the built Environment business.

Using technicalexperience and excellent people skills, the Technical Director will manageprojects and design teams to produce designs andassociated deliverables for projects.

The role will provide a client facing leadfor projects and ensure that Jacobs maintains the highest technical standards,levels of service and quality.

Main Responsibilities

As a leader in our regional multi-disciplinary design team, a Technical Director plays a lead role in the delivery of technical solutions, balancing commercial, technical and mentoringresponsibilities.

A Technical Director will be responsible for :

  • Technical direction for UK Buildings Projects, and provide specific guidance with respect to their discipline;
  • Provide leadership in technical excellence and innovation across the discipline
  • Defining technical standards and ensuring technical quality through the implementation of best practice and continuous improvement processes
  • Leading the delivery of technical outputs of projects and the seamless sharing of information with other discipline teams;
  • Ensuring technical quality through implementation of best practice and continuous improvement processes;
  • Representing Jacobs in liaising with clients, architects and other design team members;
  • Develop and maintaining excellent client relationships through successful project execution;
  • Develop talent bycoaching and mentoring less experienced staff and supporting their technicalcareer development aspirations;
  • Management of project resources and reporting to the Team Principal;
  • Management of engineers within the team with a range of skills and experience;
  • Assisting in the preparation of technical and commercial bid proposals.

    The Technical Director will cooperate and work closely with other members of themulti-disciplinary team, members of regional teams across the UK and within theEuropean Technical Network.

    The role will principally entail :

  • Relevant experience in the design, specification and procurement of buildings mechanical services to the relevant standards;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of all other aspects of MEP / building services
  • Chartered Engineer and member of a relevant professional body, or equivalent level of experience;
  • Ability in the mechanical design and delivery of projects to a high quality, from concept to completion;
  • Ability to undertake surveys and inspections and report on material and construction defects and provide guidance for remedial repairs;
  • Ability to lead a team of engineers within a project, liaising directly with clients, architects and other design team members;
  • Experience in the successful management of projects;
  • Experience and understanding of multi-disciplinary design processes;
  • Represent Jacobs at external meetings;
  • Sound knowledge of thermal modelling and energy efficient / sustainable design
  • Sound knowledge of BIM and the ability to implement the use of 3D design on projects;
  • Abilityto develop designs to eliminate health and safety risks within the design

    PersonSpecification :

  • Chartered Engineer status and full corporate membership of CIBSE
  • Experience of leading people in a building services team
  • Experience of hi tech / data centre / laboratory projects
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering a range of projects from concept through completion
  • Able to design the range of building mechanical services (HVAC)
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office software including Word and Excel
  • Familiar with UK Building Regulations and design standards for discipline
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team, liaising directly with clients, architects and other design team members and the Ability to represent Jacobs at external meetings and at presentations.

  • Committed to sustainable design with knowledge of current techniques and technologies as applied to own discipline and wider building services
  • A can do, hands on approach, able to work well under pressure and prioritise workload to meet project needs
  • Willing and quick to adapt to project / team needs and learn from experience
  • Able to communicate clearly in written, sketch and drawn forms to people at all levels
  • A good team worker
  • Flexible, adaptable and collaborative approach to multidisciplinary design, willing to engage across the design disciplines
  • Organised and methodical but open minded approach to the design process
  • Commercially aware
