We currently have an exciting opportunity for a front-end developer to join our global development team specialising in technical software for engineering design and analysis.

You will be developing Oasys, a world-leading geotechnical engineering software suite that has been used on large infrastructure projects like Crossrail, Copenhagen Metro and many more.

The role

We are transitioning our existing applications from a desktop system implemented predominantly in C++ to a modern, flexible and responsive design that is ready for cloud deployment.

Our main languages are C# / .NET, with UI development in Chromium and Vue.js and calculation code in C++.

Our team is a mix of geotechnical engineers and software developers in different locations around the world, who work to define and develop new features as well as refine and optimise the existing ones.

You should apply if :

  • You are an experienced, independent C# / Javascript / Typescript developer, with a real desire to make a difference
  • You have experience of working on agile projects, preferably using Scrum and test-driven development
  • You enjoy sharing your knowledge and mentoring your junior colleagues
  • Responsibilities of this role include :

  • Develop software in browser-based frameworks (Vue, React, Angular) and appropriate programming languages including JavaScript, Python, .
  • NET, C#. Exploring new development techniques and tools that will enhance the performance and / or functionality of the applications

  • Design and develop cloud-native solutions on AWS or Azure
  • Participate in design of user-centric, user-friendly UI’s in close collaboration with UI / UX designers, users and product managers
  • Use agile development methods, including TDD / BDD
  • Promote and support development best practice both within the team and in the wider Arup developer community
  • Keep up to date with current methods and seek new methods in the industry. Keep knowledge current through hands-on experimentation with new technologies;
  • technical reading; seminar, workshop conference attendance and interaction with subject matter experts

    Requirements and skills

    Essential skills and knowledge

  • Development experience with demonstrable proficiency in two or more of the following languages : Javascript, Python, and an object-oriented language, e.g. Java, C++, C#
  • Experience using frameworks such as React, Node.js, Angular, Vue
  • Experience with Web Application and Server Architectures
  • Experience with cloud native development (in AWS, Azure or Google Cloud)
  • Experience with source code control systems (github, bitbucket etc)
  • Demonstrated ability to create and prototype UI designs and experience working with UX and UI designers
  • Strong team working skills and an ability to build trusted relationships with different people and groups
  • Desirable skills and knowledge :

  • Experience working in an architecture, engineering or construction firm or with one of the AEC technical software vendors would be useful
  • Database development experience using SQL (SQL Server, MySQL, Postgres) and / or NoSQL (HBase, Redis, MongoDB) data stores
  • Experience with serverless’ solutions such as AWS Lambda and MSFT Surface Fabric would be a plus
  • Experience with at least one scripting language (Python, Perl, BASH, PowerShell, PHP)
  • Experience with API design and development skills including RESTful API and / or GraphQL
  • Experience of working in multinational, multicultural environments

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent experience is desirable
  • Recognised IT industry accreditation (e.g. certification in a particular technology, chartership with a relevant institution) is desirable
