The SSE Digital Services team is currently expanding our portfolio of services and solutions by moving into the Smart Energy space.

We are targeting rapid growth in this part of the business, and beginning a transformation process, focussing on local, smart energy.

Energy-As-A-Service covers a range of solutions for us. However, in the first instance we are looking to deploy our new Virtual Power Plant (VPP) solution to control client’s energy assets and subsequently generate revenue via selling flexibility in these assets through the balancing, wholesale and ancillary energy markets.

Over time we will look to exploit knowledge gained in the management and operation of such assets to acquire a client’s entire asset base and provide a full energy service back to them.

Working as the Business Development Manager for Energy-as-a-Service will be an exciting role with a genuine opportunity to position SSE as a leader in this emerging market.

You will be responsible for identifying opportunities, managing client and wider stakeholder relationships and leading bid and development teams to secure contracts and partnerships with public and private sector organisations across the UK.

The role will involve bringing together areas of different expertise and working with internal stakeholders, experts and external partners to ensure the proposition is developed in line with our customers’ needs and our strategy.

The role will develop a wide and close network of internal and external clients and other stakeholder relationships to ensure awareness and influence on market and to continuously adapt propositions to suit both.

The role will be the main client interface through the proposition / bid phase leading contract negotiations to contract close and procurement.

You will manage supporting teams to ensure that propositions / bids are delivered on time and positions taken during negotiation are signed off by the business.

You will be responsible for achieving internal approvals in line with SSE and business governance processes and deliver a sales target of completed contracts per year.

What do I need?

To be considered for this unique opportunity, you will have proven experience in securing business in the Energy Management sector with extensive business development experience within a UK aggregator and a track record of closed deals.

Therefore, a strong understanding of EU and UK policy frameworks as they apply to heat, energy, carbon and construction is required.

Strong understanding of Distributed Energy systems, and the move to local energy systems is essential combined with knowledge of the commercials of front-

of-the-meter generation and behind-the-meter generation.

You will be highly connected within the energy management sector; allowing you to continue to build and manage diverse relationships with stakeholders.

Moreover, you’ll be experienced in explaining complicated projects internally to gain approval through governance processes.

You should also have sound judgement; with the ability to interpret, analyse and disseminate complex, sensitive information.

As an experience people manager, you will have demonstrable experience of managing high Performing teams where you will lead bid and project teams.

Proposition development experience building bespoke propositions across a complex range of energy technology and solutions.

You will have the skills to calculate commercial opportunity (and risk) associated to allow you to plan resource across a complex project to fully understand potential cost of project.

  • Ideally you will understand how Smart Cities platforms are built and operate; have experience of the energy trading markets;
  • knowledge of a range of commercial structures as they apply to distributed energy and skilled in bringing together and managing a large, complex proposition that sits across multiple areas of expertise.

    You will have the ability to manage an internal virtual team, including senior stakeholders and external partners where you will continually build on these relationships.

    Proven ability to communicate and influence where your word carries weight and inspires Confidence; passionate, committed, inquisitive and able to challenge convention is what we are looking for in the ideal candidate.
