Your time on the programme will see you gaining all kinds of specialist skills and eye-catching achievements. You will be joining our Balfour Beatty Highways sector - leading international infrastructure group shaping innovative and efficient infrastructure that underpins our daily lives, supports communities and enables growth.
You’ll have visibility in key areas of our business including design, operations, safety and commercial; you’ll soon appreciate the important role of engineering innovation.
You will follow a two-year training programme, working towards Geospatial Survey Technician (L3).
Depending on project requirements, you will be site or office base in Winchester on our M3 Smart motorways project.
Our aim is to develop your skills and to help you reach your full potential. As your programme progresses you will have increased responsibility in the dimensional control of projects, supervision of specialist contractors and the construction workforce and will take the lead for solving technical problems.
You will attend college and university on a day or block release basis during the Apprenticeship.
Your responsibilities as an Apprentice Highways Land Surveyor :
Responsible for the security and cleanliness of the project survey equipment.
Responsible for ensuring that setting out is to an acceptable standard.
Responsible for the quality of the setting out installed by his team.
Responsible for ensuring effective liaison with others to progress setting out requirements.
Responsible for ensuring that project specific survey procedures are followed.
Co-operate with the Surveyor on project requirements.
Co-operate with the teams and subcontractors on their requirements, agree with the Surveyor.
Attend meetings as required.
To support the working parties that result from project and OpCo needs with respect to surveying activities.
Ensure co-operation of site survey staff with project teams (healthy relationship).
Co-operate with the Surveyor to provide KPI’s to develop best practice
To liaise with the Surveyor to ensure that the programmed survey requirements are met and monitored.
Review performances of with the Surveyor
To support the working parties which result from project and OpCo needs of senior managers with respect to surveying activities.
Ensure full co-operation of the site survey team with project teams.
To maintain a competent team of surveyors to provide the project needs.
Identify your training needs - development with your assistant surveyor.
Ensure that you receive your training needs.
To ensure you understand the responsibilities with respect to health and safety, environmental and quality requirements of the business activities.
There will invariably be additional responsibilities and duties specific to the needs of a project.
Who we’re looking for :
Minimum of five GCSE’s (or equivalent) at grades 9-4 or A-C including Maths, English and Science
As well as strong numeracy and well-developed team and people skills, you have the passion and enthusiasm to keep the momentum going on a project.
You will be able to set the pace as well as the standards for the team
You will also have the ability to describe what interests and motivates you to the construction industry
You will have a strong work ethic and willingness to take responsibility for your academic and vocational development
Pass pre-employment medical which will include a Drug & Alcohol test
