Purpose :

In Next Generation Products (NGP), our aim is to provide consumers with a compelling range of inspiring products that drive change.

This means developing products that meet consumer needs and, by driving change, will reduce the public health impact of tobacco.

In the NGP Operations function, business as usual R&D, our focus is on continuous improvements of our launched products

The responsibility of this role is to manage immediate containment and the continuous improvement of NGP devices to improve product quality and reduce product cost.

Principal Accountabilities

Operational / Professional / Business

Lead continuous improvement projects and Root Cause Analysis :

  • Applying the rules and techniques of APQP, Project manage initiatives ensuring progress to plan / budget / process
  • Review and perform defective product investigations and establish root cause
  • Communicate project status to stakeholders and Senior Management
  • Verify and validate that all improvements have been thoroughly tested and robust design verification plans are in place, compliant on a global level
  • Create reports and learning documents for future design improvements
  • Review and manage device engineering documentation including engineering drawings, test reports and technical manuals
  • Production and performance management :

  • Interpreting design drawings for design for manufacturing (DFM)
  • Implement and monitor manufacturing KPIs to ensure design and manufacturing capabilities are met and maintained.
  • Manage plant capex and quality performance to improve to Best in Class’ Material handling HIKEs (High Impact Kaizen Events) VSM, Value stream mapping OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) 6 Sigma and Lean manufacturing
  • Management

    Planning medium-long term workload.

    Budget inform forecast and adhere to financial processes and controls.

    Applying the rules and techniques of APQP in formal project management processes and controls.


    To influence and coordinate cross functional teams including internal and key external partnerships critical in the delivery of projects and initiatives so as to have most effective use of internal / external resource and expertise.

    To operate as an advisor and collaborator with the wider NGP space to build robustness and technical capability


    Key representative in engineering solutions for innovative materials / products with internal stakeholders and cross functional teams.

    Key representative in interactions with external suppliers on mechanical engineering solutions.


    Development work supported by objective evidence and validation.

    Interpretation of data submitted for Management / Technical Review.

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent qualification
  • Institution Membership

  • Associate or Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
  • Essential

  • Experience in project management including multi tasking and prioritization
  • 6 Sigma and Lean manufacturing
  • APQP
  • DFMEA / FMEA analysis
  • 8D / DPI analysis
  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
  • Experience in the design of hand-held high-volume consumer electronics products
  • Knowledge of testing and measuring techniques for product quality and product performance
  • Capability Analysis Review (CPK / PPK)
  • Working directly with suppliers / manufacturers onsite and remotely.
  • Good overall communication skills including report writing and presentations
  • Good leadership skills and an ability to produce clear and simple plans
  • Experience working with a controlled document change process (ECR Engineering Change Request)
  • Desired

  • 3D CAD experience. SolidWorks preferable
  • Experience with plastic injection moulding
  • Knowledge of PCB designs and Li-ion battery failure modes
  • Cost-benefit-analysis (CBA) and Return-on-investment (ROI) justification reporting
  • KPI definition and dashboard creation
  • Global Compliance experience for consumer electronics
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics together with experience of using FEA for modelling would be beneficial
  • Supplier management planning and handling, HIKEs (High Impact Kaizen Events), VSM, Value stream mapping, OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)
  • Experience of working in a High volume FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) industry
