Planning Law Associate -(210000RO)


We are currently looking to recruit a bright and ambitious Associate to join DLA Piper's global Real Estate (Planning) team to be based in one of our UK offices.

The role will offer the right candidate the opportunity to work on some of the largest and most prestigious real estate development and infrastructure projects in the UK and globally.

Our impressive client base includes HS2, Highways England, Argent, Mace and many. We also have a vibrant international practice and are currently advising on projects in Asia and the Middle East.

The role can be based out of Birmingham, Leeds or Manchester as the candidate will be part of a One UK Team. The successful candidate will therefore be required to travel to our other offices from time to time.


As part of our market leading team, candidates will enjoy a broad range of work that will include, but will not be limited to :

  • The drafting and negotiating of planning obligations and infrastructure agreements
  • Advising on environmental impact and appropriate assessments
  • Giving strategic planning advice
  • Supporting our own advocates and counsel at inquiries and in legal proceedings
  • Promoting compulsory purchase orders, development consent orders and other related orders
  • Implementing compulsory purchase powers and advising on compensation
  • Drafting articles and briefings
  • Active participation in business development
  • Growing relationships with clients and targets

    We do not set upper or lower limits of PQE for any of our vacancies. We have however given an indicative PQE as an approximate guide for applicants.

    Candidates who have between 0 and 1 years PQE in planning are likely to have the right level of knowledge and have gained the right level of experience needed to be able to undertake this role.

    The ideal candidate will :

  • be a qualified Solicitor, ideally qualified in England & Wales or a Commonwealth jurisdiction
  • have some planning law experience gained in a leading City, national or international firm
  • be commercially astute and stay current on key legal and business news
  • have excellent skills in communication, client relations, and team-working
  • provide a professional, quality service in a timely manner, and responds effectively to requests from internal and external clients
  • understand positive client support
  • create confidence in the team and the firm
  • work co-operatively in a team, sharing information and knowledge
  • manage their time effectively and efficiently
  • seek to manage their own utilisation wherever possible in order to meet individual and team targets
  • take ownership for achieving agreed objectives
  • recognise and seize opportunities for the firm, including repeat business
  • build and develop own network of internal and external contacts;
  • have an awareness of business development initiatives in the department and identifies ways to contribute
  • maintain a controlled, objective and flexible approach under pressure
  • exhibit behaviour consistent with the firm's values and builds relationships based on respect, trust and integrity
