Reporting to : HEAD OF LEGAL & BUSINESS AFFAIRS, Talkback & Thames

Location : Stephen Street (attendance at other sites in London and High Wycombe as necessary)

The Role : This position will be working within the legal and business affairs team, across the Talkback (Comedy Entertainment) and Thames (Entertainment) labels, working closely with the Head of Legal and the Senior Legal and Business Affairs Executive for Talkback and Thames but where necessary across other labels and programme genres, and alongside the other legal and business affairs executives to deal with all legal and commercial aspects of FremantleMedia UK’s production business.

Main Responsibilities

1. Drafting and negotiating all forms of development, production and underlying rights agreements, such as presenter, contributor, location, footage and other underlying rights / format acquisition contracts.

2. Assisting in the negotiation of commissioning agreements with broadcasters and other content distributors.

3. Liaising with the Rights Department to provide information to the Company’s Licensing and Distribution divisions.

4. Providing legal advice on programme content and compliance.

Skills & Experience

The ideal applicant will be a lawyer with relevant experience in entertainment and media law.

  • Demonstrable expertise and sound practical experience in intellectual property and contract law.

  • Working knowledge of the UK television sector, broadcaster terms of trade and current issues affecting the industry.
  • Ability to build relationships with colleagues in other disciplines including creative, financial and commercial departments, as well an ability to build effective working relationships with external contacts.
  • The ability to keep abreast of professional, legal and working practice changes.

  • Experience of working in a creative / media environment with a passion to contribute to such a business.
  • Strong interest in and understanding of the production and development process.
  • Able to balance the commercial needs of the business with the creative requirements while keeping within the framework of legal and regulatory constraints and in accordance with standard industry practice.

  • Ability to interpret and explain complex legal and contractual issues to non-lawyers.
