The Opportunity

Leonardo is a global high-tech company and one of the key players in Aerospace, Defence and Security. Headquartered in Italy, Leonardo has over 45,000 employees.

The Company has a significant industrial presence in four markets (Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States and Poland) as well as a network of strategic partnerships across the world.

We are looking for a scientist or engineer to play a leading role in our RF photonics team. You will lead the design and development of RF-photonic hardware for electronic warfare (EW) applications.

You will work closely with experts in both EW and RF receiver design to create a system that will define the next generation of EW products for Leonardo.

What you will do

You will have the opportunity to join a team at the outset of the following tasks to develop RF-Photonic technology for next generation ECM & ES products

  • Develop low noise, high dynamic range optical and RF front-ends
  • Define and source component technology to realise spread bench demonstrations of these sub-systems
  • Work with academia and commercial vendors to evolve low TRL integration technologies to deliver low SWAP, high performance Photonic Integrated Circuits
  • Develop wide band RF-Photonic signal processing to enable up conversion and down conversion of RF signals.
  • This role will involve travel across the UK for technical reviews, and may involve international working in the future. This is expected to be less than 10% of your time.

Due to the nature of our work, you must be able to -

  • achieve full SC security clearance
  • access UK eyes only information
  • access information under ITAR export control
  • What we are looking for

    Required :

  • A relevant degree ( Electronic Engineering, Physics or Photonics)
  • Experience and knowledge of designing complex photonic and RF sub-systems
  • o Low noise, high dynamic range optical and RF front-ends

o Wide band high SFDR RF-Photonic signal processing

  • The ability to distil these concepts into RF systems, sub-systems and components
  • Extensive experience of modelling in the RF & Optical domains using tools such as MATLAB Simulink, Keysight ADS & SystemVue, VPIphotonics
  • Practical knowledge of optical & RF test equipment for measurement of optical loss, spur free dynamic range, noise figure, etc.
  • The ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to a non-expert audience, in both spoken & written format
  • Desirable :

  • Experience in the design and test of RF receivers
  • Experience and knowledge of EW systems (ECM & ESM)
  • We have many professional development opportunities ranging from training courses to development programmes, and actively support professional accreditation.

Our flexible working policies will support a mixture of home based working & site based working depending on your needs.
