The role

We are seekinga data driven and target-oriented professional, with excellent communication and collaborative skills for the role of Journal Manager for a portfolio of neuroscience journals.

The role is an exciting opportunity for a candidate who is passionate about open access publishing, has previously worked in a collaborative workplace and has strong project management experience, as they will lead the growth and development of several Impact Factor Journals from the Neuroscience Portfolio as well as a newly launched multidisciplinary journal Frontiers in Sleep.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the management and strategic development of the journals, through tailored content acquisition initiatives, building and leveraging strong relationships with the Editorial Boards of leading academics as well as close collaboration with other teams within the matrix.

They will be responsible for pro-actively managing the journals performance and must show strong strategic direction to devise and implement editorial strategies to increase market share and build upon the strong recognition of the journals, while creating new opportunities to drive key performance indicators.

Under the guidance of a Portfolio Manager and working closely with members across multiple Editorial Teams, the Journal Manager role requires the ability to inspire across all levels, be a trusted advisor for internal and external stakeholders and arrive at solution-oriented approaches to deliver scalable growth.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and ideally work experience within academic publishing, which will enable them to effectively engage with high-profile scholars and be an effective team manager and interface with other departments.

Key responsibilities :

  • Manage the journals and deliver ambitious targets and objectives;
  • Drive journal growth and development through Editor engagement, article collections and section launches, informed by competitor and market analysis and in close collaboration with the other neuroscience portfolio;
  • Build strong relationships with high-profile scholars and pro-actively manage the Editorial Boards;
  • Represent the company to external stakeholders and promote the Neuroscience portfolio at international conferences;
  • Manage and lead several Journal Development Specialists and support team members across multiple Editorial departments;
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure efficiency and scalability of journal operations;
  • Collaborate with the larger Neuroscience team to align on the strategies and to minimize overlap in content and outreach;
  • Lead internal editorial projects and initiatives to bring further strategic value and growth opportunities for the company.
  • Requirements

    You are a target driven individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. You enjoy leading teams and are a collaborative team player, working closely with members of supporting teams.

    You will also be confident in working with data to perform market analyses of the competitor publishing landscape, identifying new areas for growth to inform our editorial strategies.

  • At least 2 years of experience working in a scientific publishing house, and / or strong equivalent project management experience;
  • M.S. degree or higher in portfolio-related subject area is essential with a keen interest in dissemination of research;
  • At least 1 year of management experience would be a plus;
  • Previous experience of working in a collaborative team and leading complex and inter-team projects
  • Initiative taking, dynamic and focused personality;
  • Flawless communication in written and spoken English;
  • Aptitude for digesting large amounts of information, and reacting effectively to urgent situations;
  • Ability to work independently, be highly organized and meet deadlines;
  • Sound and mature judgment; decisive and tactful when working with multiple stakeholders;
  • Openness to collaborative thinking in generating new strategies and coverage for the journals (while keeping in mind that the NS portfolio is one field);
  • Technical proficiency, with hands-on skills using current software (particularly MS Excel);
  • A working knowledge of common social networks and social media platforms.
