Kier Strategic Highways are currently recruiting for a Senior Drainage Engineer to join our Area 7 Design Services Contract with Highways England.

The successful post-holder will be responsible for designing and delivering cost effective and technically sound design solutions for drainage improvement schemes in accordance with the Forward Programme and Drainage Asset Management Plan.

Whist ensuring DMRB standards are considered, innovation is key when addressing Water Quality and Flood Resilience scheme development and detailed design.

Seeking Asset Team Agreement and promoting Departures from Standard will form a key influencing and negotiating part to this technical lead role

Kier Highways design roads, bridges and intelligent transport systems (ITS), covering strategic and nationally important roads, as well as local roads serving local communities.

Our projects range from major improvements to complete renewals of roads and structures. With specialist teams, we manage complex works from conception through to handover at the end of maintenance periods.

Key responsibilities :

  • Identify and apply appropriate methodologies and standards to produce effective and innovative solutions for Drainage schemes and studies to current standards.
  • Including optioneering for Highways England Drainage Asset Team.

  • Take a scheme from concept through to detailed design ensuring a full design pack is developed and ready for construction, developed in line with Contract and Kier QMS for Highways England.
  • Writing specifications in line with MCHW and producing pricing schedules / BoQs
  • Maintain good relations with the Client and other authorities, attending meetings as necessary across the EMAD network and associated offices.
  • Work within the wider team to enable effective delivery of schemes and studies.

  • Input into Fee Estimates, Programmes, Early Warning Notifications etc. Writing specifications in line with MCHW and producing pricing schedules / BoQs
  • Compiling the briefs and providing information for RSA and WCHAR audits, technical surveys and any required environmental and geotechnical input, as required.
  • As the technical lead for drainage in the Mansfield design office, act as mentor to junior staff imparting technical knowledge and software skills to the wider design engineers within the Kier Highways.
  • Skills and experience required :

  • Extensive experience of highways maintenance, improvement and design essential
  • Expert user of drainage and design software software e.g. WinDES, AutoCAD, Civils 3D
  • BEng in Civil Engineering, preferably post graduate qualification
  • Proven track record in infrastructure drainage, backed up by a comprehensive CPD record
  • Proven track record in applying innovation to drainage feasibility optioneering and detailed design both for flood resilience and water quality improvements
  • To work under own initiative and as a team. Seek advice when necessary, you will have the drive and determination to meet targets
  • Useful knowledge of software packages :

  • AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Revit, Navisworks, InfoWorks
  • Windes / Microdrainage
  • Flow modelling experience
  • Flood Modeller
  • Microsoft word / project / excel
  • Bentley MX
