    Context :

    The role holder will operate within Next Generation Services ISCF Challenge team, which includes team members from both the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Innovate UK.

    The Next Generation Services Challenge is a £20m programme aimed at supporting the Professional Business Services and Financial Services sectors in their development and adoption of AI and Data technologies.

    The current programme is looking specifically at Insurance, Accountancy and Legal services though the team is now looking into other areas of Professional Business and Financial Services for a potential follow on programme.

    The UK is a leader in these sectors and they are a key part of our economy, however, like many other areas of the economy, the expanding collection and use of data and the emergence of AI and related technologies has the potential to disrupt these sectors and allow other regions to displace our global position.

    These sectors have also not historically been seen as innovators so a key aspect of the programme is to develop the R&D capacity and capability.

    Job Purpose :

    As an Innovation Lead, the role holder will be responsible for Innovate UK activity within the Next Generation Services Challenge, identifying areas of opportunity for innovation, ensuring projects are appropriately supported, developed and exploited by UK business to generate growth and in response to challenges within the Professional and Financial sectors.

    Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities :

  • Contribute to the development and promotion of the Next Generation Services Challenge strategy based on a good understanding of relevant industries and technologies and wider innovation infrastructure.
  • Lead on the implementation of the strategy to enable industry to develop and commercialise new products, processes, business models and services.
  • Build strong relationships with relevant bodies and networks such as businesses, trade associations, Catapults, government departments and agencies, private investors, regulatory bodies and research organisations.
  • Ensure that UK activity is set in an international context and recognises regional strengths across the UK.
  • Work with Innovate UK and UKRI colleagues and networks to ensure that decisions made in this area make sense in the context of the wider organisation, strategically and operationally.
  • Represent Innovate UK and UKRI at events (such as conferences, meetings, workshops) and in the media as appropriate.
  • Support impact analysis of the Next Generation Services Challenge programmes and projects.
  • This is an outline description of the key responsibilities and accountabilities involved in the job. This is not an exhaustive list and the post-holder might be expected to undertake any other duties across the wider directorate, commensurate with the Band and level of responsibility of this post, for which the post holder has the necessary experience and / or training.

    Person Specification :

    This position requires a person with commercial awareness who can manage competing priorities and a complex stakeholder environment.

    The role holder will need to make sense of multiple data sources, to establish underlying patterns and articulate a clear and compelling vision of what needs to be done.

    A good team player, willing to share knowledge with others and to learn from them. Able to self-start when needed.

    Qualifications :

  • Degree or post-graduate qualification in a subject relevant to Digital Technologies.
  • Experience :

  • Up-to-date and broad-based knowledge of innovation in Services in particular Professional Business or Financial Services.
  • Current understanding or AI and Data technologies and a broad understanding of related digital technology
  • Appreciation of the wider industrial landscape in the UK.
  • Knowledge and experience of innovation in a commercial environment.
  • Familiarity with the wider research environment.
  • Ideally, experience of working across technology fields and with a broad and up-to-date understanding of developments in other technology areas
  • Skills :

  • Ability to think and act strategically.
  • High degree of organisational ability and attention to detail.
  • IT competency.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, able to present to a wide range of audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Competencies :

    Travel Requirements :

    There will a requirement to travel, mostly national, and there is some flexibility in this. Innovate UK staff make extensive use of telepresence tools for meetings to minimise unnecessary travel.

    Given the current Covid19 lockdown and travel restrictions, this role will be home based initially and make extensive use of telepresence tools for meetings, outreach, and engagement.

    In normal circumstances, the role holder will need to work in the Swindon office once a week and may have four to six nights away from home per month on average to attend conferences and events.

    Post lockdown, Innovate UK staff will continue to make extensive use of telepresence tools for meetings to minimise unnecessary travel.
