Associate Facade Engineer - London

What's the opportunity?

Our busy UK Facade Engineering team are currently delivering a plethora of iconic projects in the UK and further afield.

Recent and current commissions encompass iconic museums, premier league stadia, historic landmarks, mixed use, high-rise, and more.

We are looking for an Associate level candidate to work on a wide variety of projects in the UK and internationally. You'll be part of a wider UK team comprising around 30 Facade engineers and consultants in London, but also collaborating closely with globally situated facades teams in New York, Berlin, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shenzhen.

You will also enjoy access to the wider ecosystem of specialisms across Buro Happold, ranging from Fire Engineering, Computational design, Sustainability, Inclusive Design, Structural Engineering, MEP, Asset Consultancy, and more.

This is a diverse role with excellent progression opportunities in a globally expanding Facades discipline. Above all, we're looking for someone that's passionate about the value facade consultants can bring to sustainable building design, and are driven to push technical boundaries to achieve high performing buildings.

This role will see you providing critical leadership, technical and business development support to the London Facades team.

Your responsibilities will naturally be varied, but typically can be expected to comprise...

  • Leading facade projects on behalf of the group (operating as Job or Project Leader as appropriate), taking ownership for sustained and productive client relationships.
  • In charge of multiple projects across the group, taking responsibility for the engineering solutions while ensuring financial success.
  • Reviewing job financial performance and adjusting resources accordingly
  • Guiding more junior team members in order to achieve the project success.
  • Supporting the development of junior members of the team.
  • Supporting the delivery of the team’s Performance and Development Review process
  • Preparing Technical Specifications and check work / specifications of subordinates
  • Undertaking high-level project technical / quality reviews and attending design workshops for projects relevant to experience across the practice;
  • undertaking site visits as needed for the smooth operation of the project

  • Ensuring design rigor’ is achieved on your projects, and in particular ensuring design QA processes are fully planned and implemented.
  • Contributing to the team’s and BH-wide initiatives with respect to technical, sustainability and computational development.
  • Developing your own Client relationships and securing repeat work where possible, with overall participation of the Group Leader
  • Actively seeking new work from existing clients
  • Preparing Financial and Technical proposals.

    In return, we'd expect you to demonstrate the following...

  • Experienced technical leader; track record of exceptional delivery over a sustained period within the industry.
  • Designing in at least three of the following materials : aluminium, steel, stone, precast, glass and timber.
  • Knowledge of weather performance issues and how façade systems fail or deteriorate over the design life-span.
  • Architectural component detail design including aesthetics.
  • Knowledge of building physics including ventilation, solar gain control, thermal insulation and glare control.
  • Knowledge of various materials and its finishes in this industry and their corresponding performance / application under different environmental conditions.
  • Knowledge of industry procurement, manufacture, testing and installation processes / procedures.
  • Degree educated in a relevant discipline
  • Professional registered with a relevant institution.
  • Additional language skills would be advantageous.
