    The role

    An experienced regulatory lawyer to support the firm’s clients on all matters involving data protection, and information law issues.

    The team

    The department in which you will be based is currently made up of three partners : Richard Tinham (Head of Department) James Duncan and John Hiscock, a corporate associate, a corporate / commercial lawyer and 2 trainees.

    A partner, Jon Baldwin, in our ecclesiastical team and other fee earners in the firm regularly advise on GDPR and data protection related matters from the perspective of specific sectors such as ecclesiastical and education.

    Client base and type of work

    Typical work will include assisting clients to ensure continued compliance with the Data Protection Act and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) including terms and conditions and policy updates, advising on and assisting with data subject requests, breach handling and responding to ICO investigations, together with a variety of other information law matters, including freedom of information, the environmental information regulations and information related aspects of cyber security and marketing law.

    Client base

  • Corporate employers, family offices and high net worth individuals;
  • Public-sector and regulated third-sector clients including the many local authorities and housing associations, together with major infrastructure operators such as Associated British Ports, HS2, Network Rail, Rail Safety Standards Board;
  • Businesses with complex data protection requirements, such as regulated financial service providers and professional services organisations.
  • Aims of the department

    Aims of the role :

    To deliver an expert service providing high quality, specialist information law advice at rates that are highly competitive with the City.

    To raise internal cross-selling profile and firm opportunities as well as the team’s external profile for data protection and information law related advice through quality of service and networking, supporting all WS teams that are involved in matters of data protection or otherwise requiring an experienced working knowledge of information law.

    Candidate specification

    Requirements for the role :

  • A sound understanding of data protection, GDPR, the related regulatory environment, and commercial and contract law principles with the ability to navigate a complex regulatory environment and efficiently distil and provide legal advice in a clear, effective and pragmatic manner.
  • The confidence and ability to take on new technically complex areas of work, both independently and supervised (as necessary) and develop a loyal following both internally and externally.

    As a department, we help clients face a constantly-changing regulatory landscape, so adaptability is key.

  • To be able to articulate complex legal requirements in a clear, confident and approachable fashion, sound drafting skills and exemplary communication with clients, colleagues and support staff alike;
  • Sensible organisation skills to prioritise tasks in a busy practice with competing pressures on multiple transactions to ensure a responsive and excellent client service.
  • Self-motivated with a willingness to be involved in business development across various specialist teams to include participation in events, writing articles and bulletins and proactively identifying new innovative opportunities.
