Role Purpose

  • The GB&M Accounting Advisory Europe function is accountable to the Global Heads of Product Control and works closely with the GB&M businesses, Global Accounting Policy, Group Regulatory Policy, Business Finance and Product Control teams as a trusted advisor and business partner.
  • We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join the team as Manager Accounting Advisory, Global Banking and Markets.

    This role has well established lines of communication with the Front Office as such it is a demanding role for a strong candidate who has a proven technical accounting background aligned with a commercial focus.

    Impact on Business

  • To provide IFRS accounting advice to all business lines and support functions across GB&M in line with Group accounting policies.
  • Advising on new business proposals, live transactions and products including structured transactions in a commercially & compliant manner.

  • Proactively supporting the business in identifying accounting solutions arising in new transactions and new business initiatives.
  • Participating in GB&M and Group governance processes for new business proposals.
  • Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.
  • Resolve ad-hoc and often complex accounting queries impacting GB&M in a timely manner.
  • Proactively support IFRS and Group accounting policy development and implementation within GB&M.
  • Consider and raise any accounting reputation risk matters with input to the European Reputational Risk and Client Selection Committee where appropriate.
  • Work closely with Group Regulatory Policy to understand wider regulatory and capital impacts of GB&M business activities.
  • Engage proactively with the other GBM Accounting Advisory teams across regions and highlight accounting judgements for discussion.
  • Customers / Stakeholders

  • To provide support, accounting advice and guidance to all HSBC GB&M businesses covering : fixed income (credit, rates), equities, credit & lending, portfolio management etc.
  • Product Control, Business Finance & CFOs, Operational Accounting, Tax, Legal, Compliance, Regulatory.
  • Global Accounting Policy and external audit.
  • Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Provide accounting advice and guidance in line with Group accounting policy.
  • Assist in the development and formulation of Accounting and Financial Policy in GB&M.
  • Maintain HSBC Internal Control Standards, including the timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.
  • Be aware of the Operational Risk scenario associated with your role and act in a manner that takes account of operational risk considerations.

  • Keeping up to date with a rapidly changing accounting and regulatory environment.

  • The need to constantly prioritise and exercise time management skills to cover a wide range of different problems and issues with competing deadlines.
  • Applying professional judgement when reviewing complex business proposals.
  • Role Context

  • GB&M Accounting Advisory team resides within GB&M Business Finance. The team provides accounting policy advice and assistance to GB&M regional businesses across the world including HK, USA, Europe and Middle East.
  • Given the evolving regulatory and accounting landscape with the introduction of IFRS 9 this role provides the perfect opportunity for a candidate to apply technical accounting knowledge to new transactions and business initiatives.

    This is a role where value can be added to the GB&M business and the support functions.

  • The role holder must understands, follows and demonstrates compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which the jobholder is involved, specifically Internal Controls and any Compliance policy including, inter alia, the Group Compliance policy.
  • Qualifications

    Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications

    Knowledge :

  • Qualified Accountant fully qualified ACA, ACCA or overseas equivalent.
  • Must have a strong technical knowledge of IFRS, IFRS 9 implementation experience is essential.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Excellent knowledge of Markets and Banking products gained at a financial services organisation or training with one of the Big Four accountancy firm.
  • Skills :

  • Ability to exercise judgement in applying accounting rules and identification of accounting issues.
  • Strong organisational skills including multi-tasking, prioritisation and ability to maintain equilibrium under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.
  • Must be able to present complex accounting issues in a concise and understandable manner for non-accountants.

    Under the Company's internal 'Back to Front' / ’Front to Back’ transfer policy this role may be classed as High Risk. As a result, internal candidates may require enhanced approvals and vetting checks if they are currently employed in a Front Office department, or if they have worked in a Front Office department within the last 5 years (please refer to the HR FIM definition for further guidance).
