Laing O'Rourke has a strong, experienced legal team that provides support to the business on a range of legal issues to manage risk and reputation.

Laing O'Rourke are now looking for a Construction Lawyer to join the resilience team, which is a team within the wider legal department based in Dartford.

The resilience team focuses on providing construction dispute avoidance and resolution advice to the business, as well as supporting strategic initiatives, such as the implementation of updated process and procedures to reflect key legislative developments (such as the Building Safety Act).

What will the role look like?

  • Providing proactive, regular advice as a dedicated legal resource - being familiar with the project portfolio, project teams, relevant third parties, the supply chain and JV commercial objectives.
  • Carrying out legal reviews and risk assessments of all significant legal documents associated with relevant business areas or key projects.
  • Identifying at an early stage, potential disputes and devises strategies leading to a favourable solution that will ensure minimal legal cost and expense.
  • Supporting senior solicitors in legal negotiations and taking the lead on certain aspects of negotiation and contract settlement as required.
  • Providing legal analysis and proactive advice in relation to contractual disputes.
  • Advising the business area or key projects in relation to legal opportunities and risks.
  • Liaise with external legal advisers where external expertise has been deemed to be required and support the determination of the appropriate end solution for business area or key projects.
  • Manages the relationship with external legal advisors when necessary, making sure that costs and strategic decisions are managed and authorised.
  • Liaise with legal counsel in client entities, subcontractors and JV partners
  • Involved in drafting correspondence, contracts, claims, standstill agreements, settlement agreements, and witness evidence.
  • Attending negotiations, mediations, adjudications, arbitrations and trials.
  • What skills & experience are we looking for?

  • Legal experience either in house or as a solicitor in a recognised law firm.
  • Fully business aware, customer focused, and a good grasp of the construction industry.
  • Good working knowledge of how construction and infrastructure contracts are procured and the different risk profiles arising from different procurement routes.
  • Excellent legal technical and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Understand the importance of due process in decision making, will keep excellent records and produce regular briefing notes to inform the senior leadership in a clear and succinct manner of key issues requiring decisions.
  • An interest in developing streamlined practices and processes designed to assist the business in resolving disputes to best advantage and cost effectively.
  • An interest in legal technology and innovation. Knowledge of the latest document management technology will be an advantage, including but not exclusively for e-disclosure.
