The Opportunity

Nuclear Decommissioning

Facility Shutdown Engineer. Multiple locations to include; Barnwood - Gloucester, East Kilbride - Glasgow, Hunterston - North Ayrshire, Heysham - Lancashire, Hartlepool - County Durham or Hinkley B Somerset.

The Facility Shutdown engineers will support the Management of the Asset operational transition through to decommissioning.

The focus will include :

  • Supporting the development of the site, system and plant specific shutdown processes and plan,
  • Consideration of plant and system configuration control as plant is released from service; including isolation and demarcation
  • Consideration of preventative maintenance loading to preserve the condition of the plant (plant preservation strategies)
  • Supporting the development of essential maintenance routines for plant required during the decommissioning lifecycle
  • Supporting the removal of redundant maintenance routines
  • Supporting the maintenance of positive control of infrastructure care to ensure safety and compliance for intended lifecycle, which will include new routines and inspections
  • Supporting decommissioning transition lead and learn
  • Supporting decommissioning process optimisation reflecting the fleet engineering mandatory requirements.
  • In summary the engineers will support the operational transition through to decommissioning and enable pursuit of efficiencies and clarity including supporting the Physical Asset Management for the full AGR decommissioning lifecycle.

    The Person

    The opportunity of Facility Shutdown Engineers will be responsible for the governance of Processes, Standards and Best Practices.

  • To support the development of the AGR fleet Management of the Asset strategy for the transition from operation through to decommissioning.
  • Provision of authoritative advice, to ensure safe, efficient and reliable defuelling and decommissioning, aligned with NDA goals and best practice.
  • Support the development of the required site, system and plant specific shutdown processes and plan
  • Supporting the maintenance of SLC 35 compliance arrangements for decommissioning and associated corporate documentation.
  • Supporting plant and system configuration control as plant is released from service; including isolation and demarcation
  • Supporting decommissioning transition lead and learn
  • Fleet Effectiveness

  • Present the status of the effectiveness of the decommissioning program, including areas of concern / excellence to Senior Leadership
  • Responsible for ensuring that best practices are sought and used, innovative techniques are utilised where appropriate identifying and mitigating risk and keeping stakeholders informed.
  • Implement the relevant company processes (e.g. Corrective Action Process, Operating Experience, Feedback, Self-Assessment, and Training) to identify improvements to procedures and processes that will drive improved performance.
  • Investment and Lifetime Planning

  • Responsible for inputting facility shutdown engineering aspects to full lifecycle decommissioning plan.
  • Challenge, determining the correct work included and providing advice to inform station implementation
  • Responsible for ensuring that the shutdown engineering decommissioning strategy, plans and implementation of delivery is efficient, appropriate and timely.
  • The Skills

    Suitable applicants for this opportunity require a minimum qualification of HNC standard in an Engineering or Science discipline.

  • The post holder will normally be qualified to degree level in the relevant engineering, scientific or mathematics discipline;
  • working towards / achieved Charter Engineer or be professionally qualified.

    Specific Skills

  • An extensive knowledge in own technical area and the ability to provide authoritative advice to others.
  • An in-depth understanding of the practical application of decommissioning.
  • Experience
  • Knowledge of nuclear safety and site licence condition requirements. Good knowledge of engineering, design, safety case and nuclear facility operations is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of decommissioning regulatory requirements and liabilities management is advantageous.
  • Some experience in a technical oversight role is desirable.
