You will join our District Heating Energy Department

As our new Senior District Heating Engineer , you will be part of a dynamic and growing team, learning about technical design and other aspects of Engineering.

  • Our UK team sits within the Ramboll’s Global Energy business and comprises 19 engineers and consultants based in five locations;
  • London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol and Aberdeen. Our team’s market focus is the UK district heating and district cooling sector.

    The UK’s District Heating sector is projected to grow significantly in response to national targets to decarbonise heat generation.

    Ramboll plays a key role in helping drive this in the UK, as well as being worldwide thought leaders in this field. We also work on international district heating and district cooling projects in collaboration with our Energy Systems team colleagues in Denmark as well as Ramboll’s UK, North American and other international businesses.

    Your key tasks and responsibility will be :

  • Supporting the Department in business development activities with a responsibility for supporting bid managers to write bids, developing key customer accounts.
  • Supporting project managers in delivering district heating projects ranging from masterplans, through feasibility to design, including responsibility for reporting, producing calculations, developing specifications etc.
  • Project managing smaller projects, including managing client relationships, project budgets, team resources.

    For this role, we believe your starting point is :

  • Proven experience in designing combined heat and power and district heating projects, ideally including commissioning as well as master planning and feasibility
  • Appreciation of commercial and planning / policy context surrounding development of district heating in the UK
  • Appreciation of business models and financial modelling techniques for CHP / district heating projects
  • Good mechanical, chemical, process or energy engineering related degree, ideally with a post graduate qualification in renewable energy systems, district heating or similar
  • Chartered or working towards Chartered status within a recognised Professional Institution
  • Experience in the use of packaged software tools such as EnergPro, Termis, Hysopt, AutoCAD, GIS
  • Additional Candidate Requirements :

  • A good technical understanding of a wide range of low carbon technologies associated with district heating projects as building effective building interfaces
  • Experience in design of mechanical systems including gas engine combined heat and power (CHP), boilers, pumping and ventilation systems
  • Experience of underground pipework systems and other utilities
  • A good understanding of, and interest in, sustainable development issues as they relate to the built environment
  • Experience in the operational phase of CHP and district heating schemes
  • Track record in effective management of internal project finances and delivering projects to budget and program
  • Personal qualities that will help you succeed in this role include :

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, ideally with experience in business development, project management and client management
  • Ability to speak fluently and communicate effectively in written reports and oral presentations
