We're recruiting an Apprentice Animal Care Assistant for our West Hatch Animal Centre in Taunton, Somerset!
As an Apprentice Animal Care Assistant, you will be employed in an animal care environment gaining vital practical skills and experience, and earning a wage alongside studying your formal apprenticeship qualification at Bridgwater and Taunton College.
Some animals that come to us have been mistreated, kept in awful conditions or left without free access to food or water.
They may arrive terrified and it's up to us to try and work out why and bring them round to trusting people again. We do this on a daily basis with a dedicated team that we're extremely proud of.
Although the work is tough, it's hugely rewarding when the animals get the home they have always deserved.
What you'll be doing
Cleaning animal accommodation, pen fixtures and furniture and general areas
Providing exercise opportunities and following individual training and behaviour plans
Completing animal records and updating the computer database
Stocking and maintaining the centre - eg preparing bedding, tidying stores, performing basic maintenance tasks
Assisting with the preliminary assessment, ongoing inspection and or treatment of animals by a Veterinary Surgeon, or other authorised person at the Centre
Carrying out checks on animals, including the taking of temperature and inspection of eyes, ears, nose and throat for signs of infection or abnormality, reporting any abnormalities to manager or deputy manager at the Centre
Identifying a suitable diet, prepare and provide food and water for all animals in the establishment
Carrying out routine animal behaviour monitoring / assessment prior to rehoming and designing and implementing behavioural training plans where needed
Engaging with customers on the phone, face to face and by email
Undertaking other duties as required by the Deputy / Animal Centre Manager.
