Job Description

Formulation Department at Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking an experienced scientist to join our Preformulation group at the Oxford UK site.

The successful candidate will apply thoughtful ideas and scientific rigor to formulation design and drive deep physicochemical understanding to achieve desired bio-performance for our molecules and deliver robust pre-clinical and clinical formulations for the project teams.

The ability to bring a sense of urgency, drive results and work effectively in a cross-functional environment is critical to this role.

This role will provide an opportunity to interact with the various Research and Development functions including but not limited to Medicinal Chemistry, DMPK, Preclinical Safety and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Vertex takes a modality agnostic approach to drug development which often requires an innovative approach to formulation development.

The position will be an opportunity for the candidate to apply their considerable scientific acumen to a fast-paced environment with the goal of developing modality agnostic transformative medicines for a wide variety of diseases in the Vertex sandbox.

Key Responsibilities : .

  • Advance projects from early stages in Research through to clinical development
  • Challenges will include working with small molecules of poor water solubility that require application and knowledge of a variety of bioavailability enhancing techniques or application of advanced materials (including but not limited to nanoparticles) and novel delivery routes.
  • Manage and mentor a group of preformulation scientists along with associated lab management responsibilities
  • Deliver and oversee the optimization of pre-clinical and clinical formulations through rational experimental design, thoughtful execution, and clear data interpretation
  • Utilize computational and experimental tools as well as small scale characterization and knowledge-based methods to efficiently develop formulations that provide robust pre-clinical and clinical performance
  • Help define scientific direction and encourage technological innovation for the department
  • Collaborate within CMC teams as the Formulation lead and actively contribute to deliverables and engage in cross-functional technical review and troubleshooting
  • Serve as CMC project lead, as needed
  • Represent Formulation Development in R&D teams, external interactions with CROs, and cross-functional teams
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholder groups in R&D to effectively support on-going programs
  • Draft, review and present relevant formulation development activities to various management levels
  • Author and review technical reports, regulatory filings, source documents, patents and external publications
  • Accountable for troubleshooting and resolving highly complex formulation challenges
  • Have a working knowledge of supporting technologies / have an interest in an agnostic approach to delivery including but not limited to oral, parenteral or other novel routes of administration
  • Have excellent communication skills and the ability to negotiate with the various stakeholders and an ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Key Requirements

  • A PhD in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, chemical engineering or materials sciences
  • Experience in leading technical teams, project teams and direct supervisory experience.
  • Experience working in small or macromolecules of considerable complexity.
