Applications are invited for a studentship in the Aston Institute of Urban Technology and the Environment (ASTUTE), funded by the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
The successful applicant will join a cohort of graduate students working on projects across the broader Smart Cities field, and as part of the PhD will receive training and experience in collaborative research, relevant to industry and Smart City planners.
The studentship is offered in collaboration with Highways England and RDM group.
The position is available to start in October 2019.
This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the home / EU fees rate, plus a maintenance allowance of £15,009 in 2019 / 20 (subject to eligibility).
Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the Home / EU’ and the Overseas’ tuition fees, currently this is £12,573 in 2019 / 20.

The ground-breaking scientific and technological impact of optical frequency combs (OFC) - a bunch of equidistantly spaced narrow spectral lines or pulse train with the stabilised period produced by mode-
locked laser - has been recognised by the scientific community since 2005 when John L. Hall and Theodor W. Hänsch were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.
The advanced application of the OFC is dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS). The DSC uses two frequency combs with slightly different repetition rates to enable detection of the beating (interferogram) between the signal reflected from the moving target (Doppler LIDAR) and reference comb by a single detector.
Given the scalar nature of the signal reflected from the target, DCS-based LIDARs can provide high-precision distance ranging only without information about the object’s texture.
Unlocking the texture’s signature is a key issue towards scene objects recognition especially recognising humans against a background of objects of the same size or clutter.
To address the challenge, the ELIDAR is targeting development of an ellipsometric distance ranging based on the mode-locked fibre laser with the dynamically evolving states of polarisation.
In addition to the distance ranging, detection of the reflected polarimetric signatures enables unlocking information about the objects’ texture and so enables recognition of humans and other scene objects especially under weather conditions with deteriorated visibility by filtering polarised signal.
The successful applicant should have a first class or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification in Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Applied Mathematics.
Preferred skill requirements include knowledge / experience of scientific programming and computing, physical optics, communications.
Knowledge in theory of differential equations, mathematical physics, numerical analysis, information and communication theory is an asset.
