REPORTS TO : VP Data Center Operations EMEA

Summary :

We are seeking a Director Data Center Operations, UK and Ireland to lead and inspire our data centre teams across the UK and Ireland region together with his or her peer responsible for the Germany and Netherlands.

The successful candidate will partner closely with other regional leads as well as engineering teams to deliver and maintain mission critical IT hardware and tooling across their managed regions and sites.

The Operations Director will create industry leading vision and strategy, scale teams and operations, develop talent and deliver the right processes and standards to enable Digital Realty’s growth.

He / she is in charge of all aspects of the data centers within the respective region including the safety, sustainability, operation, maintenance, repair of all equipment and systems, supporting a 24 / 7 data center operation to achieve 100% uptime and 100% compliance with all customers SLAs and standards while building team confidence in order to further enhance customer trust.

Furthermore, he / she is accountable for the real estate management and will work closely with our Design & Construction team on all construction activities and installations to ensure our product aligns with operating standards.

In addition, he / she will be a key player in leading change and growth in the region and will develop, implement and audit local standard operating procedures in compliance with DLR’s standards and industry best practices.

As part of these responsibilities he / she will identify trends and analyze risks, and also identify process improvements.

He / she supports the pre- sales activities including conducting sales tours and reviewing lease proposals and agreements in accordance with DLR standards and local requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provide strategic leadership in the planning and delivery of technical operations in pace with the growth of Digital Realty.
  • Develop and implement cost effective systems and efficient operations to meet current and future business requirements related to the mechanical, electrical, control systems and security operations of mission-

    critical facilities environment.

  • Operate the data centre sites on a reliable 24 / 7 mode; ensuring sites are operated to the highest standard and meet clients’ requirements
  • Accountable for the engineering operations and core infrastructure maintenance
  • Responsible for identifying, evaluating and executing operational strategies to ensure DLR’s data centre operations achieve the highest level of availability
  • Responsible for a safe and reliable environment (incl. the scheduling, coordination and completion of all significant planned and emergency maintenance)
  • Technical supervision, with respect to design, installation, operation & critical incident operation, maintenance and DLRs mission
  • Responsible for the property management : oversee general facility operations, including security, janitorial and other facility management functions
  • Align international / US standards to local regulations
  • Liaise Design & Construction team in the planning, design and build of new properties and redevelopment opportunities and ensure it meets operational standards
  • Customer liaison, both customer visits on-site and managing critical incidents including post-event root cause analysis and infrastructure repair and handling of any customer complaints
  • Appointed responsible person onsite for dangerous (electrical) works and environment (F gases)
  • Manage budget / financials Opex and Capex cost control.
  • Oversee all people management activities for Tech Ops including staffing planning, performance management, training and career development.
  • Oversee infrastructure development, continuous process improvement, and scalability issues.
  • Develop strategic vendor relationships for equipment, supplies and services related to technical operations management.
  • Responsible for managing vendor service levels, negotiating contracts and managing RFPs for vendor selection.

  • Assist Acquisitions Team and other internal stakeholders in the assessment of acquisition opportunities.

    We are seeking an Operations Director to lead and inspire our data centre teams across EMEA. The successful candidate will partner closely with other regional leads as well as engineering teams to deliver and maintain mission critical IT hardware and tooling across 25 managed sites with a direct report / teams size of 50+ The Operations Director will create industry leading vision and strategy, scale teams and operations, develop talent and deliver the right processes and standards to enable Digitals Realty’s growth.

    The Role :

    The Technical Operations Director will provide leadership, management, and strategic vision for the technical operations of our mission critical facilities environment.

    The Director is a skilled communicator responsible for the day-to-day service delivery, and maintenance of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructures for a 24X7 environment.

    Accountable for overall leadership of the service delivery teams and maintaining operational excellence across the portfolio.

    They must manage the operational procedures, processes, measurements and people to ensure we deliver a best in class service delivery model.

    That includes best practice sharing and assurance that our standards and performance exceed the market place.

    The Requirements :

  • Provide strategic leadership in the planning and delivery of technical operations in pace with the growth of Digital Realty.
  • Develop and implement cost effective systems and efficient operations to meet current and future business requirements related to the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) operations of mission-

    critical facilities environment.

  • Prepare and maintain strategic and operating plans to support capacity planning and forecasting requirements.
  • Implement programs and initiatives that drive improvement, cost effectiveness and optimization of resources with Technical Operations.
  • Oversee all people management activities for Tech Ops including staffing planning, performance management, training and career development.
  • Oversee infrastructure development, continuous process improvement, and scalability issues.
  • Responsible for managing vendor service levels, negotiating contracts and managing RFPs for vendor selection.
  • Manage service level agreements and performance metrics for Technical Operations reflecting best-in-class industry standards.
  • Develop strategic vendor relationships for equipment, supplies and services related to technical operations management.
  • Collaborate with the firm’s Design & Construction professionals in the planning, design and build of new properties and redevelopment opportunities.
  • Assist Acquisitions Team and other internal stakeholders in the assessment of acquisition opportunities.
  • Responsibility for ensuring compliance to legislation
  • Ensuring that best practice on Data Centre Operations and innovation is applied where appropriate.
  • To continually seek to improve Customer / Client Satisfaction demonstrated through the approved key performance indicators or maintaining current performance levels.
  • Promote and share best practice across the portfolio.
  • Keys to Success :

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or related field, MBA or relevant industry experience in electrical engineering
  • Ten plus years of progressive responsibility within a corporate matrixed services organization, with a proven track record of providing data center / critical facility leadership for multiple clients of varying sizes both domestic and global, who are multi industry.
  • Significant knowledge base in critical environment data center / infrastructure management. Proven experience as a business executive with sound technical, financial and general management skills.
  • Experience in data center construction and operation management, with a proven track record of creating clear and attainable performance objectives, leveraging resources to develop competitive solutions for the customer.
  • Understanding of engineering disciplines e.g. electrical, mechanical, and civil or facilities management (Specific focus on Data Centre Services).
  • Strong Customer Relation skills - dealing with data centre clients (events, new requirements, load management).
  • Experience in dealing with Technical Suppliers & contractors - (procurement / management of contracts HV / LV / UPS / Generators / PDUs / Static switches)
  • Good knowledge of Technical SLA's / KPI's and measurement procedures.(ensure all services delivery meets Data Centre requirements)
  • Self motivated and result driven (Manage Area Team & resource to meet delivery requirements of Account Technical Services)
  • Understanding of Projects in occupied data center environments. (Develop asset plans / prioritize area technical requirements, support technical projects.
  • Knowledge of HSE (IOSH & keeping abreast of technical skill requirements - Corgi / IEE / Water Management)
  • Strong communication skills (Oral and Written Reports Related to Events, Audits, Due Diligence, Technical Presentations).
