The Role

The FCA is taking over regulation of pre-paid funeral plans from 22 July 2022. This is a new sector for the FCA and onboarding these firms into FCA regulation within a tight timescale by July 2022 will be a rewarding challenge.

We are building a team to meet this challenge and are looking for resourceful and enthusiastic team members to join three authorisations teams, initially on a 12-month secondment / fixed term contract.

As a Gateway Assessor you will be working in fast paced environment to apply your skills and adapt to changing demands and priorities to onboard this sector within the timescales set.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for you to be at the forefront of the FCA's engagement with this new sector. You will gain a deep understanding of the challenge these firms will face to transform and make changes to their business to be able comply with our rules, methods and requirements to be authorised by the FCA.

What does the role involve? What are the key responsibilities?

We are looking to recruit a talented Senior Associate with knowledge of the regulatory environment, particularly in relation to authorisations and / or supervision of firms.

You'll help to ensure effective authorisation of FPs to provide a coherent and consistent regulatory journey. The key responsibilities of the post holder will include :

  • Delivering high-quality regulatory recommendations, ensuring decisions are taken in accordance with the agreed risk appetite and decision-making frameworks
  • Managing a complex portfolio of cases, delivering excellent stakeholder management including appropriate escalation of issues
  • Participating in or leading departmental projects that impact the FCA’s pre-paid funeral plan authorisations, and / or the FCA as a whole
  • Working to support departmental, divisional and FCA priorities including promoting a culture of continuous improvement and efficiency gains, actively contributing to sector views and sectoral priorities
  • Looking for opportunities to share knowledge and actively coach / train fellow team members

  • Skills / Experience Required

    Minimum

  • Experience of taking a project-based approach to complex problems
  • A detailed understanding, gained through regulatory or industry experience, of regulatory requirements with specific reference to authorisations and / or supervision
  • Essential

    Demonstrates an understanding (or the capability to achieve this within a reasonable timeframe) of :

  • Pre-paid funeral plan legislation and perimeter
  • Our approach for delivering the regulatory requirements
  • Operating effectively within the decision-making framework
  • Supervisory and enforcement approaches to regulation
  • Strong report writing, communication and reviewing skills
  • Excellent relationship management skills to enable credible engagement and challenge senior internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work autonomously under pressure and deliver to tight deadlines
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to present the outcome of analysis clearly and effectively, whether orally or in writing
  • A strong team player with the ability to be flexible, solve problems and display strong interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable with responsibility and managing ambiguity
  • Willingness to look outside own role and identify opportunities to improve the way the department conducts its work
  • Desirable

  • Previous experience of assessing firms against Threshold Conditions
  • Financially literate, with an understanding of different FP business models, drivers of firm profits and risks
  • Experience of working in a regulatory environment or in a financial services sector

  • This role is graded Senior Associate REG C
  • Intake / Start date : 1st September 2021
  • 12-month Secondment / Fixed-Term Contract
  • The salary range will be approximately 46,000 to 60,000 GBP plus a competitive benefits package and non-contributory pension
