The role

We are looking for an experienced and talented synthetic chemist with a keen interest in biotechnology applications to join the Research Chemistry team, based in Cambridge, UK.

The role will involve developing novel chemistries and reagents to be implemented on Illumina’s sequencing instruments, as part of a dynamic and multidisciplinary team of scientists.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Design the target molecules, execute the synthesis and evaluate of their performance in highly efficient way
  • Characterize and assess new compounds’ performance using appropriate assays and techniques.
  • Manage goals within defined target timeframes and make decisions regarding the goals and progress.
  • Work closely with other chemists, assay biochemists, protein engineering scientists and bioinformatic scientists to facilitate technology demonstrations at system level.
  • Perform data analysis, write reports and present results to collaborators, extended teams on a regular basis and to senior management when needed.
  • Record detailed synthetic protocols, associated with data and characterization, to facilitate technology transfer and product development.
  • Provide supports to the development chemists and ensure a successful product transfer into the development phase.
  • Support the team in routine lab and equipment maintenance.
  • Education, Experience & Attributes required :

  • PhD in Chemistry
  • Excellent knowledge in modern synthetic chemistry.
  • Expertise in modern analytical methods (HPLC, Mass Spectrometry and NMR).
  • Experience in nucleoside, nucleotide and oligonucleotide chemistry or fluorescent dye chemistry would be highly desirable but not essential.
  • Highly motivated individual with proven ability in thinking innovatively and a track record in rationale and hypothesis-driven research and development.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative and open-minded team player, able to rapidly integrate into cross-functional teams.
  • Industrial experience or active participation in multidisciplinary projects would be desirable, but not essential.
  • Knowledge in next generation sequencing chemistry, biochemistry, enzymology or molecular biology would be preferred but not essential.
  • What can you expect :
